Keating's Kerry to Philadelphia

Okay as far as my Keating ancestry goes, I'll take you back as far as I can go, perhaps something will strike a chord and you will recognize a name or place.

Maurice Keating was my great great grandfather born in Kerry County, Ireland about 1845. He married Mary Sugrue and as far as I know there were 7 children: Patrick born 1868, Andrew born 1870, John born 1872, Bridget born 1879, James, Mary, and Michael, dates of birth for them are unknown.

Possible that they were born in Killemlagh, Kerry. It
is believed that Maurice was a coachman to Judge Samuel
Trant McCarthy. He and his family apparently owned land near the famous workhouse of Cahirsiveen, where many people were housed during the famine. The Keating often donated their food from the farm and the people loved them for that. In the workhouse there were 4 famileis of Keatings, Two Fundair Keatings, one of which was Maurice's family. The Con Keatings from Cornelius, and Castlemaine (Charlie) Keatings.

Maurice was 66 and widowed in Baghas, Kerry 1911 and
died in 1920.

His son Andrew was my great grandfather. According to
family legend the family was in the IRA, and came to America in 1899 because they were being sought out by the British. He married Anne Durning born 1876 in Donegal and immigrated in 1898. They had 6 children: Mary 1911-1979, Anna 1912-2005, Andrew 1914-2000, James born 1915, Richard 1918-2004, and Grace is the only one still alive I need to ask her when she was born, but she was the youngest. All born in Philadelphia to my knowledge. According to the 1920 Census they were living at 1264 S. 28th St. Andrew was a Fireman at the Oil Refinery. Anne died in 1939 and Andrew in 1954.

Richard was my Grandfather. He married Margaret Guenzer who was born in Philadelphia in 1925. They had 4 Children: Richard 1947, James 1942, Kevin 1954-1999, and Dennis 1960.

Kevin was my Father. He married Maureen Warren and had me, Kevin 1982, and my two sisters, Kimberly 1983 and Christine 1987. My father worked Construction as a Union Carpenter Local 1050. He died in 1999 at the age of 44.

Any connections would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

James Keating Born 1914 Connecticut - Placed for Adoption?

I hope that someone has information that will help me and my family to fill in this blank spot that has existed in our tree for over a decade, when we first invested time into the research of our ancestry.

It was discovered since my grandfather's death that he was born "James Keating" 13 May 1914 in Connecticut and placed for adoption to William Wakely and Jessie Lambert Wakely of Orrington, Maine who then changed his name to "George William Wakely". The details surrounding his adoption are very well concealed in regards to providing any info at all aside from birth date and state though these have not been helpful in tracking down info. I understand the sensitive nature surrounding adoption in general and especially for 1914, it was likely meant to be a closed adoption. He passed away 29 Oct 1981. Does anyone have advice? Or better yet, info? :) I feel like I'm running around in circls!

Irish Merchant Seamen

There are several Keating names listed on this new internet site.

Irish Merchant Seamen

David Snook of Rush Co. Dublin has created a database of Irish
Merchant Seamen and this is now on line at:
http://www.irishmariners.ie

"Latest news
UPDATE 13 July 2008
Over 2800 records added, total now 15,000.What's on the site?

This website contains an index of Irish born merchant seamen contained in the CR10 series of index cards in the Southampton Civic Archives. The CR10 Archive holds 270,000 cards covering the multinational workforce of the British Merchant Marine during the period from late 1918 to the end of 1921. All ranks and jobs at sea are covered from master to scullion. A unique feature of the CR 10
cards is that they usually contain a good photograph of the seaman. At this time RS2 Identity books, with matching photographs were issued to the seamen.

Each card lists personal and foreign voyage details including ship numbers. I have used Microsoft Access 2002 to produce relational databases for seaman personal details, seaman voyages, and ship details."

Redmond Keating/Redman Ceaton of Terleton's Legion

Like many of you, I have spent some time researching my Keating history. I have managed to trace it back for some way, but haven't managed to cross the pond with my research.

The earliest record I have is for a Redmond Keating who is actually listed as Redman Ceaton in the rolls of Banastre Tarleton's Legion from the Revolutionary War. He was captured at the battle of Cowpens in January of 1781 and ended up settling after the war in Nova Scotia Canada.

Here's what I have so far:

Grandparents - James Bernard Keating 1891-1969, married Agnes Anastasia Crispo 1893-1977, daughter of Placide Crispo and Anastasia Webb;

Great grandparents - Redmond Keating b.1850, married Catherine Walker 1861-1959, daughter of Lawrence Walker and Johanna Hearn;

Great great grandparents - Michael Keating 1822-1898, married Mary Anne McNair 1826-1864, daughter of James McNair and Elizabeth Black;

Great great great grandparents - Redmond Keating died after 1838, married Mary Ryan probably of Placentia Bay Newfoundland;

Great great great great grandparents - Redmond Keating, first record 1778 - died 1824, married Elizabeth Spinney 1770-1871, daughter of Samuel Spinney and Hannah Smith. Redmond enlisted in 1778 with the British side in the Pennsylvania Light Dragoons during the American Revolution. His unit became part of the British Legion under Banastre Tarleton. Redmond was captured at the Battle of Cowpens in 1781 and deported to Port Mouton, Nova Scotia at the end of the war. He eventually made his way to Manchester (near Mulgrave) Guysborough County were he died in 1824.

Tarleton's Legion, was originally formed in 1778 by the union of the Philadelphia Light Dragoons, Caledonian Volunteers, and Kinloch's Light Dragoons, all from the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. In 1779, the volunteer group was named the 5th American Regiment, and in 1780 it absorbed the Bucks County Light Dragoons.

So here's where I am now, I am trying to find out where Redman Ceaton came from and how he found himself an Empire Loyalist. Any information would be great if anyone has anything at all.
Keatings from Corabeg and Valentia to New London

I have two John Keating families. One John (b. 1847 in Co. Kerry) married Nora McCarthy. They had one son, Patrick Joseph, b. 1867, in Valencia, Co. Kerry, who later emigrated to New London, Ct. where he married Ellen (Nellie) Sullivan. They had six children: Anna, John J., Helena B., John J.,charles P., Teresa Josephine, and Paul Francis.

The other John Keating (also County Kerry, probably Corabeg, b.date unknown) married Mary Murphy. They had seven children: Lawrence, Mary, Bridget, Nora, Catherine, John, and Michael, all born in Corabeg in the 1880s. Lawrence emigrated to New London, where he married Bridget Veronica Lavelle of County Mayo. Mary, their mother, died in 1898

Any further information about any of these people appreciated.

Orphanage in Rochester NY

My Grandmother was born in 1931 in Philadelphia, PA. Both of her parents died by the time she was 4 years old. She was left to the care of her grandparents who died some years later. She was then sent to an Orphanage in Rochester, NY. The only information my grandmother had given my mother was that my mother was named after on of the Nuns who cared for her. Through research, I believe that she resided at St. Patricks Girls Orphan Asylum that merged with three other orphanages in the 1930s.

I can not find a birth record for my grandmother. I am waiting for her birth certificate, but there was always a contraversy of what her real name was. We believe her real name was Eileen Patricia Keating. My grandmother always claimed that they screwed it up on her birth certificate. on my grandmothers death record it shows that her name is Patricia M. Carey (Carey being her marriage name). I am so confused.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me as to how to locate an orphan record?

F.Y.I: SHE WAS NOT ADOPTED AND WAS EMANCIPATED AT THE AGE OF 16.

Keatings Cahirciveen

Just found out I am related to John Keating in NZ;

In 1901, Michael Keating, born c, 1847, a Master Blacksmith of Quay Street, Caherciveen, was married to Mary Riordan , born c. 1851; they were married about 1876; they produced: Ellen ("Ellie"), born c. 1877, a Teacher; Margaret ("Minnie"), born c. 1882, a Milliner; Julia, born c. 1886; Kathleen, born c. 1888; and Michael Joseph, born c. 1892. In 1911, Michael and Mary had been married for 35 years and seven (?) of their children were surviving, and Julia, Kathleen, and Michael Joseph (now a Telegraphist) were living at home. Patrick emigrated to the Azores and married a Portuguese lady, they settled in Portugal, I have a copy of the Keating Portugal family tree. At the Presentation Convent in Caherciveen were: Ellen between 1890 and 1896; Margaret ("Minnie") from 1 April 1895; and Julia between 1895 and 1902. I have no school records for Michael Joseph. Regrettably, I have no record of the graves of Michael and Mary "across the water" at Kilvarnogue and suspect they are now buried under an enormous pile of wild blackberries!

Michael was probably (in fact, almost for certain) the son of Dennis Keating who, by 1851 had given up farming and was a Blacksmith at 47 High Street, Caherciveen. Dennis worked with his older brother, Daniel Keating, also a Blacksmith at 23 High Street.

Both Dennis and Daniel were the sons of John Joseph Keating (1760-1833) of Killognaveen and Mary Creagh, born c. 1765 at Termons, and all their children were born at Killognaveen: Daniel (1787-1874) and Dennis (1791-1878) the twin of Maurice (1791-1875). Their other siblings were: John Joseph (born c. 1783), my great-great-grandfather; Honorah (1785-1872); Thomas (born 1789); James (1801-1871); William (1805-1866); and Patrick (born 1806); and there "were said" to be two or three other daughters, and I suspect they were named Jane or Johanna, Ellen, and Margaret.
Are there any African American Keatings?

I know that this is something of a politically incorrect question, but an African American friend of mine asked me if there were any black Keatings. I told him I had no idea, but considering that most Keatings came to the U.S. after the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation it was unlikely that any Keatings were participants in the slave trade and handed down the Keating name to any slaves. Furthermore, my impression is that most Keatings immigrated into Northern urban areas and not in the South and, as Catholics, were most likely morally opposed to slavery.

My friend countered (accurately) that in the mid 18th century that many Irishmen were plantation owners and slaveowners (i.e. the O'Hara's in Gone With the Wind) and that it was possible that there had been a Keating that was a slave owner.

Again, I apologize if this is an offensive question to anyone as I do not mean for it to be offensive and it is an honest and sincere inquiry into the Keating name in America. If anyone has an answer to this question I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Fidelisimus Siempre

Seeking descendants of Joseph KEATING, born 1865 in Bridport, Dorset. His Mother was a CLINTON, daughter of Henry and Margaret CLINTON, but which daughter we do not know. In the 1871 census of Littlehampton it shows Joseph living with his Grandfather Henry and Henry's daughter Margaret CLINTON. Could be his Mother died in childbirth. Joseph does not show up in the 1881 census I'm told, so I'm hoping he emigrated. I'm descended of Joseph's uncle, John CLINTON, and I'd love to learn more about young Joseph.

Keatings from Co. Armagh and NY City

My GGG grandparents were James Keating and Susan Short from Clay Townland, Keady civil parish, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Their sons Francis (b. 1936) and John (b. 1848) were baptized in the town of Keady’s RC church, Derrynoose RC Parish. My GG grandfather was their son Andrew Keating (b. abt 1835 (no baptismal record found). Andrew Keating emigrated about 1855 to NY city. His father James and brother John may have emigrated too. I have found a burial that may equate to James and a naturalization probably for John. I have some information on later generations of some related Keatings in Clay, but do not have precise information on how they relate to my GGG grandparents and their descendants. Andrew had a family in NY city with first wife Jane. I do not have information on the descendants of their children Mary, William, James, Jane, and Jennie born between 1859 and 1868. Andrew married my GG grandmother Rosanna McManus in 1870. I have some information on the descendants of their children Elizabeth (m. Joseph White), Andrew B. Keating (m. Louise Messereau), Rose (no descendants), and Margaret (m. James McGuire). Would like to find information on other related Keatings and Shorts in Ireland, in the U.S. and anywhere else.

I am looking for information on my gg-grandfather, John Keating, who was born in Ireland (location unknown) abt. 1837 and died in NYC in 1904 (buried in Brooklyn). He was married to a Mary or Bridget (unsure of name vs. nickname) Monahan Keating (born abt. 1833 in Ireland and died 1903 in NYC). They had 7 children: Elizabeth, Patrick (died at birth), John, Helen, Susan, Edward, and May.

I am desperately trying to find out when they came from Ireland, and where in Ireland they are from. I have some information on the Keating children, and would be happy to share.

Looking for family of James Kehoe/Keough b. bet. 1899-1900 married to Lillian b. abt. 1902 in NY. They had son James b. abt. 1920. In the 1930 census they lived in Brooklyn on 50th Street. James Sr. was a police officer. Also living in the household was Margaret Keating (sister-in-law) b. abt. 1902 and her daughter Dorothy b. abt.1925. I would like to know the relationship between the Kehoe and Keating family's to Maraget Sweeny Hogan b. bet. 1870-1873 in Irland and died on Sept. 13, 1938 in a bus accident on the way home from visiting her "nephew, James Keough, a NY police officer" according to an article in the Boston Globe. I would also like to know how to research James employment. Please email Sharelli@aol.com

Keating/Leona Bergeron Keating/Illinois

Looking for information on my newly found relatives! John Bergeron, born in 1867, in Illinois, married Julia (Unknown), who was born in 1874, in Canada and immigrated to the United States in 1877, at the age of 4. These two had eight children that I am aware of: Joseph, b. 1892 in Illinois; Roy (this could be Ray), b. 1894 in Illinois; Theodore, b. 1897 in Illinois; Leona, b. 1898 in Illinois; Victoria, b. 1900 in Michigan; Veronica, b. 1903 in Michigan; Carrie, b. 1905 in Michigan; and, Beatrice, b. 1908 in Illinois. In 1910 the family lived in DeKalb County, Illinois, town of Sycamore. Their third son/child is my grandfather, whom I never knew. I do know that John and Julia's son, Theodore married Elsie Archer and had two sons, Leonard b. in 1919 and Theodore b. in 1922 (my father). Around 1935, Theodore divorced Elsie and married another woman (unknown) and had two children with her. I believe their names were Jeanne and John. Both were born in the mid to late 30's. It is believed that this family of four lived on the west side of the City of Chicago. Because of divorces and deaths, until this week I really didn't know about any of these siblings except for Leona, who married a man by the name of Keating and raise a family in Illinois. If you know of any information on any of these people or about John and Julia, please let me know. We have a Bergeron line as well. Thank you.
I'm at a loss here; need help

Hi, everyone. I have been working on my family tree for a little over two years and have just now start tracing my Irish ancestry, but I am at a total loss. Actually, I don't even know how to begin. My great grandmother was Alice Keating, b.1874 in Ireland. She and her mother, Alice Keating, b. 1838 immigrated to the United States in 1890. The mother, Alice Keating (1838) settled in Swampscott, Essex, Massachusetts. I have found her listed as a boarder in the 1900 census. She is residing with Chester Dargin and Mary A b. 1864 in Ireland. Mary came to the US in 1884. I am assuming that Mary A. may be another daughter of Alice. My great grandmother married Charles List and settled in New Jersey.

I don't know where to begin to look in Ireland. I have read that different names are more prominent in different areas of Ireland, but am unsure where the Keating name comes from. Can anyone help me narrow down the field and can anyone offer some good Irish websites? Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

There are some records of him being in Louisiana and then coming to the Zepher, Texas area .If you have any information on James Wooten Keating, I sure would like to hear from you.
I am looking for any one who might be able to help. I am looking for information on a Michael Keating, may have been born April 1850 in New York or in Ireland. I do know that he married Sarah Jan Harness on Oct. 31, 1872 in Howard Co., Indiana. They had 6 children Harry Albert, Viola A. ( maybe Della), Anna M., Maude L., Daisy, and Austus (Michael O.). He died Jan. 17, 1925in Cass Co., Indiana. I just have not had any luck finding Michael before 1872, or who his parents are. He has had his name spelled Micheal, Micheal J., Michael J., James M., in the Deer Creek, Cass Co., Indiana census.

I am seeking information to verify if there was also a daughter, Marie Louise Keating who was placed in a convent after Catharine's death. Marie Louise Keating was my grandmother, but she left few records.

Chicago area Keatings

I am looking for information on, or descendents of, John F. Keating and his wife Helen Schmidt (or "Smith"). They lived in Chicago from 1900 until ?, I have found them on the 1900 and 1920 census'.

From the 1900 census it appears they were married around 1897. This census also lists a Charles Smith as residing with them, he would be her brother if my info is correct.

They had four children listed on the 1920 census, Robert E. age 20, Margaret age 17, Ruth H. age 10, and Helen C. age 7.

Please e-mail me if any of this seems familiar.
email: swissgrinch@yahoo.com

Thanks!

Looking for info about the Irish origins of James Keating, my GGGF. Born in Ireland but emigrated to Newcastle NB about 1830 with wife Mary. Some indications his brother John and wife Ann came with them at the same time and settled in Chatham NB, all in the Miramichi area. James' son Patrick was my GGF and I find much info about him. James shows up in 1842 land grants records and in 1851 census, as does his brother John's family, but no indications of where in Ireland they came from which is what I am really searching for.
