James Timothy Keating b 1856 Ire, 1876 came to USA

Hello all, still haven't given up on my scalawag great-grandpa. Born in Ireland (place unknown) abt 1856, came to US in 1876ish, Spring Valley NY. He married a Caroline Mildeberger and the family moved to New Haven CT where his two sons Herbert James and John Edwin were born. He took off around 1895-1898 for Maine and married widow Flora Mae Jordan. They moved to Brooklyn and pretty much stayed there until Flora died around 1930. I have totally lost sight of him after that, and also have no info on him from his days in Ireland (not enough to get started).

Re: James Keating Born 1914 Connecticut - Placed for Adoption?

My great grandfather was James Timothy Keating. He was born in 1856 and came to the US in 1876. He was married to Carrie Mildeberger in New Haven, Connecticut, but abandoned her and his two sons prior to her death from cancer (aged 34) in 1895. Before he left he took the boys and put them in an orphanage in NYC (grandma had to go get them out). He went to Maine and married a woman named Flora Jordan who was a widow. Being a seemingly callous type of fellow what you describe sounds a lot like something he'd do. I have very little info on him, other than he had gone into the paint business. He was good at covering his tracks. A child on the side would have ruined his marriage (at the time he was living in Brooklyn)

It might have it on his death cert. where he is born in Ireland. I was down at the Cook Co. Vital Records office several weeks ago to get some death Cert for the Barrys. I planning on going down their next week. So I will order a death for Thomas Keating. We hope to travel to Ireland in the next year to find out about the Barry's and Keatings. Jill

My GGGGrandfather Lawrence Keating lived in Newtown, County Carlow. His son Patrick came to NYC around the 1860's. His headstone states he was from the Parish of St. Mullins. Curious to know how you know your James is from Boris, St. Mullins? I understand Newtown is right next to Boris.
Thanks.

I can't match up any names with my run of Keatings, family history says they were from Cork County and ggmom Ellen McNeill had a twin sister Catherine who became a nun (Sr.Gertrude); Ellen married a Keating, arrived in USA at Fells Point, Baltimore Maryland - I can't get past this-Mom or dad of Ellen or Which Keating she married. Patrick seems to be the only name I found from Cork. Feel free to see my tree but they changed Keating to Caton in 1890.

Hallo,
Maurice was my first cousin, the son of my Aunty Margaret whose brother, James Patrick Masterson, was my father. I think this makes us first cousins once removed? My elder sister, Beryl Elizabeth (1941), died in 2005, but my brother Norman James (1943), my younger sister, Lorna Mary (1949),and I (1945)are all alive and reasonably well.
There was a 21 yr age gap between my parents, so my cousins Maurice and Betty were 2 or 3 yrs older than my mother and thus they had "courtesy" titles of Uncle Maurice and Aunty Betty. I never knew Jack - I believe he emigrated to Australia. After my dad died of a heart attack in 1954, Maurice & Betty used to visit each Christmas and took us to a Christmas "do" at the Hoover Building in Perivale, until Maurice's death a few years after my dad's. One of your Grandma's other brothers - Uncle Ned - lived in nearby Greenford and used to take us kids to Richmond Park most weekends until his death. I had thought there were 11 siblings and which included a brace of twins. 16, wow! Their favourite brother Christopher, was killed in the Great War. Lorna was going to be named for him had she been a boy. Only our brother has had children, so you have a pair of second cousins there - Lisa Jane and Lee James Masterson.
Did you post the photos of your dad? Lorna has all of those at her place in Essex.
I hope this info has been of interest! Should you want to email, you can reach me at iris.masterson@btinternet.com
With kind regards,
Iris Masterson
She is shown as born in Ballylanders, Limerick Co., Ireland.

The father Charles shows a birthplace of LONGPORT, and what looks like P.I.

Do any of your records clarify the birthplace of Julia's father, Charles?

Thank you very mucy.

Keatings on the Irish Border - Dundalk, Clones

I am researching a branch of the Keating family who lived in Seatown,Dundalk on the border with the six counties. There also probable links to Clones, circa 1840 - 1920's.

There was a tradition in my branch of calling the first born boy Samuel. One married Rose Anne Hughes Dundalk 1892.

Trades which the family are linked with include the railways - references to a Samuel Keating being the Station Master at Clones (Great Northern Railway)and to the Irish prison service. Does any of this sound familiar?

I'm looking for someone's Keating family who lost track of my great-grandfather, Thomas Keating.

He first appears in Columbiana County, Ohio on the 1860 Census, living with the family of James Rogers and James' wife, Mary Keating Rogers. I can't determine if or how he was related to Mary.

James is the brother of Joseph Rogers, both of whom are the sons of James and Gracie Rogers from County Donegal who arrived in America in 1823 and produce a large and fertile family. I have evidence of all sorts of descendants of the Rogers, but I simply can't find where my great-grandfather came from in Ireland.

One family story claims he came to Ohio from the rest of his family in New York, but I don't know if it's NY state or NYC. Immigration records reveal about 5-8 Thomas Keating arrivals in NYC alone in the 1850's, with the approximate 1827 birth year.

I post this message in hopes that someone, somewhere is looking for that missing Thomas Keating who left his family to go to Ohio in the 1855-1860 range.

Thank you.

Tom Keating
