I have found a James KEATING the son of John KEATING and Mary nee MULHOLLAND who was baptised 10th September 1842 at St Mary's R.C. Church, Dublin.
I do not know if this is the same James who came to New Zealand so would be very interested in anyone who knows anything about this James so that I can either claim him or eliminate him from my enquiries.

Why not get his baptisimal cert, it will tell you a lot. I was also baptised at St. Mary's. The address is:

St. Mary's Catholic Church
Haddington Road
Dublin 4

35 Keatings emigrated to New Zealand between 1871 - 1888. They travelled on 15 different ships, this was under a New Zealand emigration scheme.

I have the names, ships, dates etc for 11 of these (6 males and 5 females) they were all from the Caherciveen area of Co. Kerry. They all sailed on various ships from England.

5 Keatings were shipwrecked on the "Cospatrick" which departed London 10th September 1874, the ship caught fire 200 miles south of Capetown, no survivors.

I have Keatings who settled in Cantebury, Otago Province, Dunedin, Westland Province and Wellington.

My relation John Joseph Keating emigrated to New Zealand, Greymouth Westland 1878, he married Sarah Margaret Lynch.

Children:

Mary Jane 1880-1940
Ellen Margaret 1881-1928
Sarah Syrena 1882-1888
Hanorah Matilda 1884-1962
William Patrick 1885-1965
John Joseph 1887-1966
Michael Edward 1888-1888
Jeremiah ("Tim") 1889-1943

My Cousin, John Keating of Point Howard, Wellington is the author of the book "The Keatings of Caherciveen". I know that John is not very well at the moment and I would like to take this opportunity of wishing him a speedy recovery.

John has full research on all Keatings who emigrated to New Zealand.

As co-incidence would have it, John Joseph Keating is my cousin but from his Jacobs line. He has been assisting me and has not been able to help. A James Keating is my husband's great grandfather.
You are right, he is ill, We saw him yesterday and I'm afraid his condition is terminal.

My cousin Michael Keating who was Lord Mayor of Dublin has been keeping me informed of John's illness.

Sorry to hear we are not related, seems to be a lot of inbreeding in New Zealand.

I discovered a whole branch of our family living in Portugal, the elder statesman of that branch Count Patrick Keating visited me last year with his daughter Anna. Patrick is 91 years old, it was his first visit to Ireland.
His Father and my Grandmother were Brother & Sister.

Is there any way I can get your e-mail address so that we can continue this regarding the likes of John's health without putting it on the public domain? My e-mail address is availble on my profile.

Do you know how I might be able to get a copy of this book, The Keatings of Caherciveen by John?

As John died earlier this year his godson has taken over his affairs. His e-mail address is dazza8@xtra.co.nz. He should be able to help you.
