George Keach - Utah, Colorado

Looking for information about George Keach, married Elizabeth Thorpe about 1891 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He owned the Intermountain saloon and had worked for various bottling companies in Salt Lake City. He left his wife and two children, Eckley Martin and Alta Cora, in Salt Lake about 1896 to go to Colorado to find gold. He sent for her but had disappeared by the time she went to find him in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He was presumed dead. She later remarried James Martin Stull, an attorney in Salt Lake City.

Family lore says he was born in Dublin, Ireland, but his children's listings in the census say their father was born in Indiana or possibly Pennsylvania.

Would appreciate any info.

Thanks,
Tiffany Shapiro

After further research, I've found that George Keach was born 23 Oct 1863 under the name George O. Martin to William and Malinda Jane York Martin. He married Katie V. Lienemann in 1884, had a son - William E. Martin - moved to Wisconsin for a time, then it appears he left his wife and child and his family assumes that he has died.

He shows up in Salt Lake City, Utah, as described above, and then he disappears from his supposed gold mining trip and his family assumes he's dead. He then moves to Sacramento, CA where he works for a furniture company, later opening his own - The Home Furniture Company - in downtown Sacramento. He remarries Nora Jacox and they have three children. He leaves this family and moves to Riverside, CA, where he later marries Anne J. Burke and has three children with her. He died 25 Apr 1944 in Riverside, CA under the name of George Keach.

If anyone has any further information, please contact me. I'm still trying to determine his migration and other areas he may have lived, as well as if he has any other descendants. I'm particularly interested as to why he changed his name and let his family assume he was dead, when he lived for another 50 years. Very interesting man.

I have several George Keaches in my family line and earlier this year have become involved with the Find A Grave website -

http://www.findagrave.com

If you visit this site and type in "George Keach" under the non-famous search you will find three George Keaches and one George Keach was buried in Riverside, California. I know this because I requested a phot of his grave after discovering that there was a George Keach buried there.

The mystery of the Keach clan remains. Not only was the gravestone not very helpful with who he might be related to the "author" of the phot has opted to remain "autonomous". I , however, followed the contributor's link and asked who was buried next to George - "Father" Keach. I was not thrilled with the vague reply, but I was thankful for another photo of Anne "Mother" Keach.

Perhaps you can ask the anonymous grave photographer if he or she would tell you the names on other gravestones that are next to "Father" and "Mother" Keach....as their names MIGHT PROVIDE A CLUE ABOUT RELATEDNESS !!!

I would very much like to hear when you find out any further information. You can email me directly if you like.

Elizabeth Thorpe remarried James Martin Stull and had three children: Adeline, Rebecca Marie and John William. These three, as well as Eckley and Alta, are all deceased. Your account of George jibes with everything I've heard.

I realize it has been over 7 years since this post, but I hope you still find this post.

Do you know why George chose to change his name to "Keach" ? Did George have any Keaches in his family ?
