Searching for others

I am interested in contact with anyone else who is aware of members of their family with the surname KAVALECS. My wife's family can trace their descent to parts of Hungary. However, I suspect that there may be several variants of the spelling of this name, specifically including KAVALECZ.

I know this post is old.... But my Grandmother was Eleanor Kavalecz. Daughter of Peter Paul Kavalecz and Anne Huck. Spent most of her life in Elyria, Ohio.

Hmmm ... Interesting ... I have never come across an Eleanor KAVALECS or KAVALECZ before, and the name Pater Paul KAVALECZ doesn't mean anything to me either.

Do you happen to have any idea at all when or where your G-grandfather was born? My wife's great-grandfather (Andras Mihaly KAVALECS or KAVALYECS, see http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/19962126/person/875688208) was born in Hernadvecse, near Csenyéte, Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen, Hungary in 1861.

Oh sure! I have some info... just what I could get out of my family and what I could get out of the Ellis Island manifests, etc...
My grandmother Eleanor(Ellie) Kavalecz(s) married into the Udovich family. She was born on Jan 9 1924 in Elyria, OH. Her siblings are Jennie(Hungary, 1912), Helen(Ohio, 1914), Joe(Ohio, 1915), and Ida (Ohio, 1920).

Their parents were Peter Paul Kavalecz(s) (b. Jun 29 1888, Hungary... d. 1948 in Ohio) and Anne Huck (1888, Hungary/Austria). Peter Paul arrived to Ellis Island around 1910-1911. I'd have to go look it up again.

Peter Paul's Parents were Joseph Kavalecz(s) (b. Jan 1832, Hungary) and his wife was Catherine or Katalin Serke or Serek. Peter also had siblings: Andras (1860, Hungary), Mary (1870, Hungary), Rosa (1874, Hungary).

I've tried getting past the 'great greats' but that's about as far as I've gotten. The whole Austrian/Hungarian mesh is very confusing. From what research I have 'kind of' understood is that most of my family (Udovich included) are from around the tri-border with Slovenia, Austria, and Hungary. 'I think' haha!

Emberburning:

I was able to do some searching on line earlier today and my bet is that there is a relationship between your family and my wife's family of KAVALECS/KAVALECZ (because the name is VERY rare, and because clearly both families seem to have come from the northern border of modern Hungary with the Slovak Republic (not Slovenia, which is way further south).

I have had some experience of teasing out connections like this in the past, and I will tell you that it takes, care, patience, and a great deal of luck. Look how long I have been waiting for you to find the earlier message I had left! Don't be in a rush!

It is reasonably possible that my wife's great-grandfather (Andras Mihaly KAVALECS) was a brother or cousin of your GG-grandfather Josef KAVALECZ (the father of Peter Paul, b. 1888). However, without some additional information it is likely to be extremely difficult to prove this. It does appear that Andras Mihaly had a brother called Petro ("Peter") KAVALECS, and they arrived in America together in 1895. But this "Peter" is obviously not "your" Peter!

One of the characteristic attributes of the Greek Catholic families from this area is the repetitive use of the same group of first names ... which, as you have probably already discovered, only complicates matters still further.

I am kinda tied up with other issues at present, but later in the month I hope to have a little more time on my hands and will try to use some of it to do a little more "exploring".

:O)

Sounds great. Yes I have noticed the repetitive names. I have a tendency to mess around with my and my fiancé's trees every now and again. I like to leave months in between to see if new info has been posted.
Definitely is interesting that after 14 years you get a possible link. Haha! I only just noticed the surname boards last week.

I'm pretty sure that I found the manifests for the Kavaleczs' on Ellis Island. I'll see if I can track them down again.

My main reason for looking around, especially on my paternal grandmother's side, she expressed once when I was young that she had some nobility on her side. So I'm curious as to who.
