Virginia Hess Smith Kaufman , age 90,
passed away Sunday April 1, 2012 at home.
She was born December 3, 1921 in Erie PA,
the daughter of the late Martin and Catherine Hemlien Hess. A lifelong Erie resident, Virginia was an independent, resourceful, hardworking woman until the end. She was proud to have marched for civil rights in Erie in1964. Following the tragic death of her first husband, Robert Smith, Virginia raised four sons on her own. She was a woman of words and loved to play scrabble, do crossword puzzles, and read the daily newspaper because" it pays to increase your word power." She was loved by all who knew her and was known to never do anything wrong or harmful to anyone. Besides her parents and her first husband Robert Smith, Virginia was also preceded in death by her second husband, Oliver Kaufman and two sons; Thomas E. Smith and Russell J. Smith. Ginny is survived by two loving sons; Michael G. Smith and Kenneth J. Smith along with two grandchildren; Lucy Smith, and Megan Wry and her husband James. She is further survived by seven great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial mass at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 629 Hess Ave. on Wednesday April 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Metropolitan Erie, 202 East 10th St., Erie, PA 16503.
