Looking for information on the KATAFIASZ surname in Toledo, late 1800's. I have Agatha KATAFIASZ born Podgorzyn, Poland (possibly Poznan?) married John ANIELAK in Toledo, her parents Mateusz/Matthew KATAFIASZ and ?? (can't read church record). Any info much appreciated.

I''m replying to Judy Ellis Czarnecki's listing, as I too am looking for my Katafiasz Ancestors. My great grandfather and grandmother were the caretakers of a convent outside Pittsburg (Belleview), PA, (The Sisters of Nazareth). Their names were Antonia & Melchoir Katafiasz. I believe they came over from Poznan. They had two sons, my grandfather Aloysius (Alois or Alojzy) who married and eventually moved to Arizona, and his brother, Ignatius Katafiasz, who has offspring in the Toledeo area I'm told. If you've heard of Melchoir, Ignatius or any family ties to him in your area, please let me know. I'm possibly going to Poland in a couple of weeks, and now wish I would have stuck to my inital intentions of family research from a few years ago! Thank you

Hi Michelle,
For some reason the name of Melchior Katafiasz strikes a bell with me -- I have seen that name somewhere in my researches but I will have to dig around a little bit to figure out just where I saw it. I am think that he was a sponsor or godparent on a baptismal record but will have to go back and check to be sure. I will get back to you with whatever I find, I may have to go back to the microfilms to be sure which will be this weekend but I will check it out.

Carol, I have Casimir "Casper" Katafiasz, born in Toledo on 9 March 1906 (baptized at St. Anthony's) and died 3 June 1986. His parents were Stanislaus "Charles" KATAFIASZ and Magdalena KACZMAREK and they were married in 1890 also at St. Anthony's in Toledo. They had 12 children: Walenty, Agnes, Wladyslav "Fred", Anthony, Cecelia, Martha, Felix, Casimir "Casper", Alexander, Theresa, Joseph and Irene. Stanislaus was born in 1865 supposedly in Jaruszewo, Poland (Poznan) but I have not confirmed that. I have info on Stanislaus & Magdalena's other children and also on Stanislaus's parents and siblings (he was one of 9 children).

I'd be happy to share what I have and I'd also like to know about Casimir/Casper's wife and descendants. Please reply or e-mail me at judyellis3@aol.com

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Judy,
I'm checking back with you, from an email over a year ago (!) - March 2002. I was wondering if you ever saw the name of my great-grandfather, Melchior in your researches on microfilm (or great-grandmother). I just drove to Poland a few weeks ago, and have met a Polish, female journalist who has offered to assist on researching the churches in the Poznan area. I think if she does this, I will be paying her as I know it would mean a lot to her. Anyway, if you saw anything more on that name, I would greatly appreicate it. I've made it to Poland 3 times now, and what great people, but still on hard times.
Thanks for any information!

Michelle, nothing so far but I have started a project of transcribing all the entries from the St. Anthony's church records. I bought the microfilms and have started the (slow) process of trying to make an index. I think it will be worth it in the long run but it's slow going. As for the Katafiasz name, I recently learned that one of the sons moved to Rochester, NY so I'm working on that angle now. Also waiting for some film from the Family History Center, I have a lead on where in Poland the family came from. I'm hoping that my Czarnecki family came from the same place. What do you know about your g-grandfather Melchior?
Talk to you again soon - if you want to e-mail rather than post messages, my e-mail is judyellis1@comcast.net

Carol, I have a new e-mail address: judyellis1@comcast.net
I'd still like to exchange info about Casimir/Casper Katafiasz especially anything that might lead to the hometown in Poland. Thanks!

Did Aloysius have a brother named Arthur who lived in Denver in 1929? Arthur was married to Clarice.
