from another board:
My maternal grandmother was a Matta, and the whole family is a bit of an enigma. My great grandfather (Michael Matta)came from Austria (presumably Slovakia/Carpatho-Rus [?]), as was listed on his citizenship papers in 1903. He settled in New Philadelphia, PA (near Pottsville) and pretty much lived there until he died in the 20s. He married an Elizabeth Karabinchik, and they are both buried in sacred heart cemetery in New Philadelphia. At any rate, i don't know much about them at all, and I would love any info you may be able to share about the Matta's...i.e., origin, ethnicity, etc...
