Abraham and Eliza lived in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, as of 1840, and then in Montour County in 1850, which was created from Columbia County, before moving to Branch County, Michigan between 1854 and 1860. The family apparently started using the spelling KANOUSE after moving to Michigan; I suspect that this was in response to living close to KANOUSE families from New Jersey, descendants of Jacob and John George KANOUSE, brothers who emigrated from Germany to New Jersey.

Columbia Co, PA 1830, 1840; Montour Co, PA 1850; Branch Co, MI 1860, 1870 as Abram KANOUSE
I was unaware of Marion's existence, but she was clearly a daughter of William Wallace Kanouse and Delia Cullinan, who married in Wayne County, Michigan 2 June 1834.

William W. Kanouse was born about 1809, probably in Newfoundland, New Jersey. He came west to Michigan between 1830 and 1834. In 1837, he was a steamboat captain and piloted the maiden voyage of the Governor Mason down the Grand River from Grand Rapids to Grand Haven on 4 July 1837. He lived in Norton Twp, Ottawa Co, Michigan in the early 1840s. He was in Stockton, California in 1850, and in Kaufman County, Texas from 1861 to 1875, where he married two more times.

I have not found death records for either William or Delia. Besides Marion, they had a daughter, Helen Julia Kanouse, who was born in Ohio in Sep. 1836, and three sons: George Montague Kanouse (b. 1842), Edward Kanouse (b. c. 1844), and John B. Kanouse (b. Feb. 1849). Helen, George, and John all married and had children. I haven't found any record of Edward after 1860.

Would be happy to exchange more detailed information.

I thought I would write this on every message board with this variation name. I am trying to find the parent's of John Henry Knous(e) born 1816 in Columbia, PA. He left in 1832 and came to Schuyler County, IL and married Sophia LaMaster in 1850. By the 1880 census he said his father was born in Germany and his mother Pennslyvania. Every document I have looked at never showed his parent's names, including his obit.

If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know.

Thanks,
Kelley

I wanted to add George's parents - William Wallace Kanouse and Deliah Cullinan married in 1834. There is no Marion Kanouse or anything similar to that name on the 1840 census.

I don't know how else Marion Kanouse could be related to George Kanouse. And, I still can't find any information for Marion Kanouse prior to her marriage to William Miles Humphrey.

Census records show her either born in English Canada (Ontario, I'm guessing) or Ohio. George Kanouse was born in Ottawa, Michigan, so it's possible the Canada indication is really a Canada territory that has the same name as a place in the US. After Marion Kanouse Humphrey's husband died, Marion moved in with her daughter, Ella Humphrey Buckley in Multnomah, Oregon where she died in 1930.

Again, any help would be appreciated!

Hello,

I am trying to find more information about the Kanouse family.

Marion Kanouse married William Humphrey and is the mother of my great-great grandfather, Edward Humphrey.

Marion is related to George Montague Kanouse, born in 1842 in Ottawa, MI. Edward Humphrey is listed as his nephew, living with him and his wife Clara in the 1880 census (Michigan).

I'm having difficulty locating Marion's parents. I did find a death record which might belong to this same George, showing parents, William Kanouse and Deliah Cullinan; however, they do not list Marion as a daughter

Can anyone confirm this or provide more information?

John George Kanouse - Cottage Grove, Wisconsin Photo-died 1870

Attached is a photograph of Rev. John George Kanouse and his son, Rev. E. D. Kanouse, M. D. of Dane County, Wisconsin. Photograph is from the 1851-1901 history and minutes of the meeting in the book titled "Fifty Years of The Presbyterian Synod - Wisconsin". Photo caption states John came to Dane county in 1846.

Excerpt: "In 1868 the "Father" of the Fox River Presbytery was "Father Kanouse" who was so highly valued for his valiant service and unselfish devotion to the cause. If it be true that sons of great men degenerate then how great a man he must have been whose son Elder E. D. Kanouse is of granite character and exceptional mental ability and theological insight." Book also refers to "the two Kanouses, J. G. and Peter, had long been active..." Reference also made to same Elder E. D. Kanouse of Cottage Grove.

I am not researching this name but including the info to help others who are.

Perhaps we could help each other out.

Ask away about the Kanouse line. I could probably help you.

I have been tracking my family for some time. After digging through the many misleads I finally got a social security application for Earl Harrison Kanouse - b.31 Jan. 1889 in Portsmouth, Ohio - son of Frederick William Kanouse and Mary Swabby.

Can anyone fill in additional info?

Thanks for the info, from 1850 census they were stepdaughters
of Cornelius Mesler in Port Jervis, Orange Co. NY
Cornelus Misler 46 Farmer NY Rhoda 43, Andrew J Misler 22 Farmer
Mary J. Canouse 17,, Sarah Misler 14, William Canouse 12 Margaret
J. Canouse 9 Mahala Canouse 5. From later census info Mary
was born in New Jersey in 1836, Margaret in New York in 1842.
The Youngest Mahala married Asa Kaewood in1862 as a Mesler
but her birth being about 1845 shows Mr. Kanouse was alive until
then and Rhoda or Rhody may have been his wife before Cornelius
Curtis

Elizabeth Kanouse was born on 1 January 1764 and baptized at Ramapo Lutheran Church, Bergen County, New Jersey 4 March 1764. Chronologically, it is clear that Elizabeth was Jacob's daughter with his first wife, whose name is not known, and not with his second wife, Mary Peer, with whom he had his last child in 1800.

Elizabeth died on 24 January 1827, aged 63 years, and was buried in the Presbyterian burial ground of Rockaway, Morris County, New Jersey. She is named in the will of David Peer of Pequannock Twp., Morris County, New Jersey, dated 4 February 1821, proved 16 April 1824. Elizabeth and son-in-law Timothy Douglas were appointed executors. David Peer and Elizabeth Kanouse had two children: Annie, baptized 1786, who married Timothy Douglas, and Annor (Hannah?), born say 1792, who married Obadiah Baldwin.

The KANOUSE family to which you were linked seems to have descended from a KNAUSS family that changed the spelling of its name to KNOUSE and KANOUSE to make it more understandable to those who were tempted to drop the K as is done in such English words as knife and knight.

The people who I suspect were your ancestors were descendants of a KNAUSS family in Dudelsheim, Hessen, Germany. that goes back at least to the 16th Century.

I find a Jackson KANOUSE (1840-1917) born in Benton, Columbia County, PA who ended up in Branch County soon after the CIvil War. This fellow is a distant relative of my KNAUSS relatives. .He is one of several children of a Frederick KNAUSS.

Re: Kanouse of Branch County Michigan

There was another KANOUSE family in Branch County. I find that a Jackson Kanouse, probably born in 1840 in Pennsylvania and died 1917 in Branch County, Michigan, is probably the son of a Frederick KNAUSS of Columbia County, MI. The name is respelled to reflect the attempt to pronounce the "K", requiring a vowel (thus "A", and it appears as KNOUSE and KNAUS.

If the connections are as I suspect, your KANOUSE, a KANOUSE family that I found in south-central Michigan and northeastern Indiana, and my KNAUSS line are related, descended from a common ancestor Lukas Knauss of Dudelsheim, Germany.

Jackson KANOUSE apparently married a Harriet Mosier of Coldwater "when he was 25" -- probably 1865 after service in the Civil War in the 44th Illinois Regiment. She died in 1887, and he married a Margaret STRAW (but one person has a Margaret ZULL) . He had three survivng sons, one of whom was by Harriet Mosier -- Lloyd in South Dakota, George W(ashington) Kanouse in Sturgis (St, Joseph County, Michigan -- close by) and Fred Kanouse.

A cemetery list establishes that Fred was born in 1869 and died in 1951, so he is the one of his surviving sons by Harriet Mosier, and the others are by Margaret Straw (or is it Zull?)

In any event there is a KNAUSS family in south-central Michigan and it is probably related.

He is the son of a Lyle Kanouse and a Myrtle Draper; he was born 17 June 1925 in Coldwater, Branch County, MI, and died on 18 April 1987 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX. He worked for an aerospace company.

I think, although I am not completely certain, that the family surname was originally KNAUSS, the name being changed by some (but not my closer KNAUSS relatives) to KANOUSE around the time of the American Civl War to prevent confusion to something more phonetic.
There were two other men named Nichols in the same company, so their officer requested that he change his name. He served for two years. and his pension papers state that the pension of John Nicholas or Canous or Kanouse was to commence on the 4th day of March 1831; semi-annual allowance ending March 1833.
Did your uncle move to Burbank, CA? If so, I'm pretty sure the Harry Fewless you're looking for is my grandpa. He died a long time ago but I have lots of pictures of him.

These Canouse girls are almost certainly descendants of one of the two Kanouse brothers who settled in northern New Jersey, Jacob and John George Kanouse (originally Knauss). I don't have them in my database, but I'll try to keep this in mind.

Your Josiah KANOUSE is probably the son of
Abraham KANOUSE, b. 1804 PA, m. PA and Elizabeth ("Eliza") ____, b. 5-2-1808, d. 1-7-1871. This is a Josiah who I was previously unable to find, but another Josiah, this one's nephew (son of Abraham's other son William KANOUSE) moved to Branch County, Michigan, so the circumstantial evidence is very strong (and, yes, this IS a different Josiah; he was born 1869 and died 1944, and was married to his cousin Stella Irene KANOUSE).
Abraham was the son of Frederick (chr. Friedrich) KNAUS (my ancestor), b. 4-21(or 24)-1768 PA; d. 1833-1838, m. 7-10-1792 PA; and Sarah KROMAN (d/o ?Rudolph KROMAN and Catharina ____).
Frederick was the son of Michael, who was the son of Johann Henrich, who was one of Ludwig KNAUSS' sons.
