I have a great uncle George Hartnagle, who was born in Troy, NY in 1892. He had a son, George, born appx. 1923, mother's name was Minnie Kline. George, Sr.'s father came to this country in 1881 as Alois Hartnagel. At some point he changed his name to Aloysius Hartnagle. Different spellings occur at different times in Church and public records. By 1900 they were spelling it Hartnagle (in 1900 Census) Could this be the same family?

I have done research on this myself, and I believe it is the same family. See we are German, so when the brothers came over from Germany the name was turned more "American" at least that is what my uncle told me. Hope that helps. I am a Hartnagle.

My great grandfather was also a "Hartnagel" from New Jersey. I have seen the name spelled both ways but mostly Hartnagel. Any information on John Hartnagel of Mercer County New Jersey.

Hi Mike, except for one item most is I "gel"--but as a child I know I mispelled it often. Grandparent from the Wuertenberg area-near Austria. There is a town or tiny place called Hartnagel in Germany. I can't find much info on it, I guess I did have Latitude/longitude at one time. Now misplaced. -- I do think great grandpa's family did come from Austria area. anyway, whatever is correct makes little difference. The "gel" was on ship list correctly.
