Looking for any relatives of Charles Kalagias, who emmigrated to America in the early 1900's from Chios, Greece.
Rumor has it he came across on a Greek Navy Ship to NY harbor, then jumped ship to swim ashore.
He was an illegal alien and INS was going to deport him. So he married an Greek girl who was an American citizen named Helen Pappas.

Hello:
I am researching my great grandmother and her brother
Although they are believed to both be from Sparta Greece, there is a possibility
that her brother was from Samos. Her name was Triandaphilia and his her brother was named
Yirgos Yanni Kalogreas. Do you think they could be related to your line? Yirgis Yanni Kalogreas
was born about 1881 and came to USA around 1907. He arrived in New York and eventually went to own a
small restaurant on Atlantic Blvd in Virginia Beach Virginia. There is a possibility he may have lived on James Street while in New York when
he first arrived. Triandaphilia Kalogreas arrived in USA 1911 and was living in the Louis Pappas household in Boston Mass. for a while after her arrival.
Please let me know what you think

Greetings Despina!

My father, Kostos Constantine Kalagias, was from the island of Chios where all of his family originated from.

I am not sure if Kalogreas is another form of the name, but I do know that Kalagias was and continues to be how it is spelled on Chios.

My father was previously married (before he married my mother)to a woman whose family was Pappis (their choice of spelling the name when they arrived in the USA).

My dad arrived in the USA after jumping ship in the early 1930's. He lived in Westchester, NY and then the Bronx, NY. One of his brothers, Macadia Kalagias, came to the US and lived in Queens,NY as did one of their sisters,Helen Kalagias-Apostolidis. A second sister,Marika Kalagias-Lamanis, settled in Springfield Mass with her husband and family.

We have been in contact with other Kalagias' in the USA, and although they use the same spelling, they pronounce the name differently, and claim no relationship to the Chios clan.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Try doing a Kalogreas search on several of the internet telephone white pages. Maybe you'll come up with some names and address of people that you can contact by letter to see if they are family, or at least they may be able to provide you with some leads.

Best wishes!

Joanna Kalagias-Benka

Joanna:
I apologize for the delay in this reply, but I guess the site no longer notifies you when someone has responded to a forum. I thought it used to do that. Do you know of any LALLAS families from Chios. I ask because that is where my great grandfather (the one that married a Kalogreas), he was from Mellinos a small village in Chios. The information you gave me was great, I wish I could find that we are related since it seams that you have the line pretty well worked out. Again, thank you very much. P.S. There are a couple of things you mentioned that did ring a bell (Pappis name especially). If anything, I will let you know.
Thanks again
Despina
