Please give me more information about your father Aron Kahan and his brother Josef from Maramaros Sziget. Do you know their birth dates? Do you have other information about the family? I am in contact with several other people with KAHAN family from Sziget and other places in Maramaros and find that most of us are descended from R. Yehuda KAHAN, the first rebbe of Sziget who died in 1819. I look forward to hearing from you.

My great grandparents were Benjamin Kahan, and Regina Kahan, his second marriage. He immigrated to USA in 1904, settled in McKeesport, PA. and later Cleveland, OH. I am seeking info about his parentage and first wife and second wife's familes.

I am in contact with an Edward KAHAN b. Cleveland 1927, probably a 4th or so cousin of mine, whose family were KAHAN from Sziget who settled in Cleveland. He is descended from Zev KAHAN, son of Rabbi Yehuda KAHAN, who had a son Nechemye, a shochet in Kabolacsarda, just west of Sziget. Nechemye had a son Aharon Mordechai who had a son Shlomo b. 1856 who came to Cleveland. Shlomo died in 1933-34 while on a trip to Pennsylvania (perhaps visiting relatives?). My great-grandparents were Dov Berisch KAHAN and Dvoyra ZEGAL who lived in Sziget and had children including my grandfather Chaim (Henry) b. 1869.

Maybe the family you're researching is from my Great grandmother's side. She was Regina (Freyda Rifha) Kahan, daughter of Chava Kahan, granddaughter of Rebbi Yida Kahan of Sziget. She was born in 1879, married Benjamin Kahan and came to US in 1904, to McKeesport, PA. Moved to Cleveland in 1918.

R. Yehuda Kahan of Sziget had 7 sons and one daughter that we know of. Do you know which one was Chava's father? Were Frida Rifka and her husband Benjamin cousins? Who were his parents and grandparents? Please contact me at vkahn@kmort.com so we can exchange info.

Are you related to Helen Schneider? Helen Schneider was the sister of Marion Safier, wonderful mother of Sanford Safier and Claire Safier Dworkin, and grandmother of my first husband, Jonathan Dworkin and his siblings Jeremy Dworkin, Jill Dworkin Talisman and Jeffrey Dworkin. They all lived in Cleveland, OH.

I believe that Regina Kahan was the stepmother of Marion Safier. Grandma Mary also had a brother who was an attorney in Cleveland, William Kahan, and a sister Belle Fried.

If this is your family, please advise and I will put you in touch with the Dworkin part of the family.

Sorry for the gigantic delay in getting back with you. I plead computer problems and living family.

I don't know anything about Chava's parentage, beyond the name Reb Yida Kahan of Sziget.
Benjamin and Regina probably were somewhere related, don't know.. email me at Beambemity@aol.com and let's pursue this.
