Kah from Tolna, Hungary

Kah from Tolna, Hungary

Surnames: KAH, MARTIN, PANKOW
My great-grandmother, Elizabeth KAH, married Peter MARTIN. Don't have specifics on marriage date, but best guess is late 1880's/early 1890's. They had a daughter, Magdalena; a son, Peter (my grandfather) and another daughter. Peter was born about 1892/3. Magdalena came to the US prior to 1907. Peter arrived in 1907. Peter & Elizabeth arrived in 1912.

I am looking for siblings of Elizabeth and Peter who may have come to the US and settled in the Milwaukee/Racine area prior to 1915. My grandfather, Peter, left New Jersey in about 1915 to go to "cousins" in Wisconsin. He lived and worked in Wisconsin until late 1919, when he returned to New Jersey with his new bride, Anna PANKOW. I'm hoping to find the "cousins" and, perhaps, more info on family in Wisconsin.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Do you have Elizabeth's and Peter's arrival manifest?

Zlatica,
No, I don't have the manifest. My arrival date for them is based on the 1920 US Federal Census. That was were I got it.
I still haven't had a chance to go through all the info you have sent me. I hope to have time to spend with them on Sunday afternoon.
Happy Easter,
Barb

I did not find them arriving NY EI but I could have missed them. Maybe they came thru Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston or Canada. A census information if not the most reliable.
At least 3 documents on each ancestor to make sure you have the right one to follow.
Happy Easter.

Zlatica,
Honestly, up to now, in 3+ yrs of searching, their arrival is one of the things that fell through the cracks...I just didn't follow-up on it. Date-wise, it made sense, as I expected that their son and daughter would need to work for a while to help them with their passage. I'll do some more checking, but I think NY Ellis is the place...the year's probably wrong.
Thanks for the help, and again, Happy Easter.

Hi Barb,
If you are sure it was NY EI than use www.stevemorse.org to find them. Much more flexible, this site. Remember that the first name would not be Elizabeth but Erzsebet

Zlatica,

Where did you find Magdalena's (Magdolna') 1905 record that you listed here. Was it on Ancestry? I hadn't looked for it before. I'm so confused about Alsonana, Mlinska, Hungary, Croatia, etc, etc. I just can't quite get my head around it yet.

I guess the Kah's came from Croatia while the Martin's came from Hungary. I don't quite know how they could have connected, but I guess they did. Maybe I'll get it in time.

Barb,
the arrival manifest found on www.ellisislandrecords.org I use one step/gold form www.stevemorse.org Much more flexible to find an ancestor arriving NY EI.
In location type Mlynska and click using one step. You should get 48 people from this location including KAH and MARTIN.

Keep in mind: up to 1918 it was Austria-Hungary http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
After the fall of this empire several new countries were formed. In your case [former] Yugoslavia which broke up in early 199- into Croatia; Slovenia, Serbia, Herzegovina etc.

Alsonana was and is in Hungary
Mlinska was Hungary but now Croatia.
