Hilsenheim and Hilsenheiur

Are the towns of Hilsenheim and Hilsenheiur, in Alsace, one and the same?

I am trying to trace my 3rd GGrandf, Dominique Bapst, born 1797 in Hilsenheiur according to his Naturilization papers. He came to US in July 1843 and settled in DuPage County, Illinois. It is said that "...he was a Kaffer" and I am supposing that his mother's maiden name was Kaffer. His first wife died after they arrived in US and he married Walburge, and supposedly her maiden name was Neff, also from Alsace.

Can anyone provide more info on the Kaffer, Neff, or Bapst families that were related to Dominique?

I've been going through records in Hilsenheim and there were Neffs and Keffers and Bapst. Wonderfully, the records are online but not in English. Before 1872 the records are in French and after 1872, they are in old German which is nearly impossible to read. The link to the Bas-Rhin website is http://archives.bas-rhin.fr/scripts/05sources/05_sources.asp. There are Birth (N), Marriage (M) and Death (D) records as well as some censuses. Nothing is indexed so you must review page by page.

Diana- Thank you for this information. It is a very helpful resource for anyone researching Alsace, Bas-Rhin. I have used Google / other / translate to be able to translate the French to English. Once I did a couple documents, the next ones were much easier.

I also want to thank the Ory family for all their help in locating information on my Bapst family. They have done a terrific job of researching ancestors that came from Alsace to the Naperville, Illinois area. If there was an Academy Award for Genealogy, I would vote for them.
