Re: Kaanan - Caanan - Keenan
Hello- I realize it's been a few years since you posted you query, but I recently discovered a great grandmother with the maiden name Kaanan. I too ran some searches but came up empty handed when trying to track any other Kaanans. Have you had any luck since your posting? Jack

Re: Kaanan - Caanan - Keenan
Hi Jack
No nothing since!! All I know about James Kaanan is he was born in Ireland around 1806 he came to England and married in 1825 at St Marys in Stockport, Cheshire. He and his wife settled in Dukinfield Cheshire. I know nothing else about James, who is your relative? Where did she live? Family tales say James went to the Black Country in England when he originally came but I can find nothing associating him to this area. I wonder if there is a link?

Re: Kaanan - Caanan - Keenan
Jo, Thanks for writing back. My GG grandmother's maiden name was Ellen Kaanan. Born 1863 Ireland, immigrated 1875 to the states. Married Daniel McCauley 1883, last year on census was 1900 living in NYC. Can't find her on a ship manifest or on the 1880 census to know if she came over here with her family. The only way I even found her maiden name was on a birth certificate for one of her kids. It sounds like you're in England, yes? I live in the Blue Ridge Mtns of Western North Carolina near a town called Asheville. I moved out here from New Jersey in 1992. My parents & their roots are from Brooklyn, Queens & Manhattan but all immigrants from Ireland & Bavaria in the mid 1800's. So tell me, does it rain there as much as they say? Jack

Hi Jack It will be a link we will need to bear in mind in future to see if we can link up eh! Yes I'm in England! Its not usually toooo bad - having said that its been raining/sleeting/snowing for around 3/4 days now and its bitter cold at the moment! Blue Ridge Mountains ohh that sound lovely! I love NY! I've been 3 times the last time about 6 months ago. What is the climate where you are now then? Jo

Re: Kaanan - Caanan - Keenan
Although I'm at an elevation of 2300 feet, the temps usually hover in the 50's this time of year, dipping down into the 30's at night. Yes we'll need to save this link. My membership on Ancestry.com is limited to U.S. records, although I understand there's not a whole lot to go on with records from Ireland before the 1900's. If your membership is limited to the UK, let me know if I can be of help on my end. Jack

Re: Kaanan - Caanan - Keenan
Jack
Yes thats the trouble isn't it records from Ireland aren't too good, and James was in the UK by 1820's so I've not much chance with him really, any records with his place of birth on merely say Ireland. My membership is UK restricted so vice versa if you would like anything looking up let me know.
