Nicolaas Kaan dies

Funeral service for
Nicolaas Teunes Kaan, 86,
will be this Thursday at the Peet Mortuary, Lusk,
beginning 2 p.m. Kaan died Monday night in Denver.

Father Roger Bond and Rev. Frank Blish will preside at the service. Tim Johnson, accompanied by Minerva Watson, will sing "Peace in the Valley," "How Great Thou Art," and "The Old Rugged Cross." The American Legion will play taps and Kaan's grandsons will be pallbearers.

He was born in Holland, May 10, 1891, the son of Jan and Jantine Kaan. He, along with his father and two brothers, immigrated to the United States in 1911 and settled in Harrison, S.D. In 1914 they moved to Wyoming where they homesteaded southeast of Lusk.

He married Edith May (Mae) Eikenberry May 12, 1921 in Torrington. Seven children were born: Helen Redding, Lusk; Norma Shillenn, Lusk; Myrna Christinsen, Laramie; Donna Jetson, Great Falls, Mont.; Leta Fagan, Casper; Nick Kaan Jr., Laramie.
One daughter Phyllis Kuhn, preceded her father in death.

Kaan was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, a 50-year member of Odd Fellows, a charter member of the B.P.O.E. (Elks), a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Wieten Dupes Post No. 4.
He served for many years on the Niobrara County Fair Board and the draft board.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and one daughter. He is survived by his wife, six children, 15 grandchildren, brother Menno Kaan, Lusk.

Donations to the Niobrara Senior Center would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

Burial will be in the Lusk Cemetery.
