I am looking for help in finding any information on this family surname. My great grandfather according to death records of my grandfather (name listed as Kaall) and grand uncle(name listed as Kaal). Information I have and approximate date of birth of my great grandfather indicates she would have arrived from Holland in the US between 1875-1880. I have been told that she was nine months old when she arrived in the US. I find no ship records which contain either variation on this surname or lists a nine month old child. Can anyone help me in finding further documents to research on immigrants from Holland during this time period.

What was your great-grandmother's first name? Do you suspect that she was an orphan at time of immigration?

Here is what I do know about her:

Magdalena Antonia Kaal b. 5 Apr 1876 in Holland d. 15 Oct 1959 in Stanislaus Co, CA buried in Stanislaus Co Cemetery, Stockton, CA.

1920 Census: California, Stanislaus Co., Modesto Twp. Walnut Ave.

Daniel F. Conant, age 48, born in Mass., farmer
Magdalena, wife, age 43, born in Holland
Frederick P., age 19, born in CA., mechanic
Margaurita A., age 15, born in CA
Daniel F., age 11, born in CA
Maria J., age 9, born in CA
Theodora C., age 7, born in CA
Cecelia D., age 3, born in CA

1930 Census: California, Stanislaus Co., Modesto Twp. (appears to say "Conant Ave.")

Daniel F. Conant, age 58, born in Mass., age 28 when married; farmer, father born in Mass., mother in Northern Ireland.
Magdalena A., wife, age 53, born in Holland, age 23 when married, no occupation, parents born in Holland, immigrated in 1885, she is listed as a naturalized citizen. Daniel F. Jr., age 21, farm laborer
Theodora C., age 17
Cecelia D., age 13
John R., age 9

Possibly sisters from Ellis Island records:

Dorothea Kaal Age: 20
Port of Embarkation: Rotterdam
Vessel: Edam Destination: Los Angeles, CA
Date of Arrival: September 11, 1893
Microfilm Roll: 618 Ship Manifest number: 1410

Christine Kaal Age: 24
Port of Embarkation: Rotterdam
Vessel: Edam
Destination: Los Angeles, CA
Date of Arrival: September 11, 1893
Microfilm Roll: 618 Ship Manifest number: 1410

She was supposed to have accompanied her parents in 1885 when she immigrated to the US. I find no record of the Kaal surname on ship manifests during this period. We have no port of immigration, but suspect that it was New York.

There are no death records(supposedly destroyed during a fire sometime in the 1890's) of her parents. The two above named Kaal's also disappear from records(those I have checked for in California, at least) after their arrival in Los Angeles and remaining family does not remember any sisters being mentioned, but believe that there were other children that immigrated at a later date.

Also no record of Magdalena's marriage to Daniel Conant has been located and with the exception of the above two census records I find nothing else on her. Any help with her would be appreciated.

Keep looking for a marriage record for her. My contact had no luck finding an immigration. A good many of the Kaals lived in Gelderland and Noord Holland. Maybe in time those births will be available on-line.
