Aloha e ka po'e 'ohana Ka'aihue! I'm Joe's (Iokepa's) nephew, grandson of Irene Ka'aihue Pedro, the only sibling left. Through talking story, I was told that her father's real name was Lua, but because of the multiple hawaiian meanings of that name, one of them being pit, referring to Pele, that name was viewed bad. And so he took on either his Aunt's name or his Grandmother's, I'm not too sure, whose name was Ka'aihue. She also says, her father told her that all of Kaupo is related, the reason being that it was said they had intermarriages in Kaupo. Other relatives I have from Kaupo are the Kahunanui's and the Kanuha's, and a few others but I forgot. Anyways, Aloha nui and Mahalo for taking the time to read this :). Na ke akua 'oukou e malama mau ai.

Aloha.

My great great grandfather was a Ka`aihue born in Kaupo in 1857. My great great grandmother, who was also born in Kaupo, in 1859, is listed under variations of her name, Nohua, Kanohua, and I have also seen Kanuha. My great grandmother, known under variations of Victoria Helen Kaliko (Ka`aihue), was born in Kaupo in 1879 and presumably first married a Kaliko and later married Wai Chock when she was 29. One of the witnesses at their wedding in 1906 was a Rebecca Keanu.

My great grandmother had at least three sisters, Lucy, Mary Katherine and Mary Ann, and at least one brother, George.

If anyone would like to exchange information or if there is a group that I may join, please e-mail me at loshiro@hotmail.com.

Mahalo.

Although this is my husband's e-mail, I maybe can add a little light. Your grandmother , who is by the way, also my aunt is really "Rita Kaaihue Pedro". Her father who is also my grandfather, I call him tutuman, as I remember was born in Kaupo. He use to like to talk about the paniolo days. He was born 1893 in Kaupo, Maui. His father's name was Tom Kaaihue and his mom's name was Victoria Keawe Maihui. Tutulady's name is Mary Kiha, also born in Maui. I remember we use to talk story all the time on the porch in Waimanalo. If I can remember anymore about your great-grandfather and his stories, I'll e-mail you. Oh by the way, my husband is also related to the "Kaaihue Ohana".

Aloha no! Thru a reply posted by my aunty I found out that my Ka'aihue 'ohana is also related to the Maihui family. My great-grandfather's name was Peter Lua Ka'aihue whose mother was Victoria Keawe Maihui also born in Kaupo. If this helps you can email me or my aunty, whose email is posted on her reply to my message. Her husband, also related to the Ka'aihue is a Kanuha.

I was reading your post on Ohana from Kaupo. My 2nd Great Grandfather went by the names David Nohua & Konohua. Sometimes he used the name "Nakaikuaana", which translates to "older sibling or cousin". He was also born in Kaupo in the year 1845. I was wondering if there might be a connection. Also the "Kanuha" name was used by one of my Great Grandmothers' brothers her name was Elizabeth Hailani Haupu before she married my Great Grandfather, Bernard Palenapa Hoopii.
