Johanna Tasse, said to be of Prussian extraction but may be inter-related with Cajun or Canadian French, was married in Milwaukee as the second wife of African-American (mulatto) merchant Jared Gray. Gray was formerly a barber and abolitionist in Poughkeepsie, NY, before removing to Milwaukee and eventually to Chicago where he extended his career from barbering to being a successful hair work manufacturer until burned out by The Great Chicago Fire from which his business never fully recovered. Jared had several children by the first marriage, and I am trying to discover whether his youngest child Jared Gray, Jr., was with Johanna. Any information on her family in Milwaukee (or Menasha???) would be appreciated. --Mb, Indianapolis
