LEST WE FORGET
January 19, is Lee's 197th birthday. It is also a Texas state holiday,
Confederate Heroes Day. It is no longer observed in Texas but I
choose to display its colors in front of my residence on this day in
memory of the 300 thousand men and boys who gave their lives for the
Confederacy. These honored dead include three of my great, great uncles.
They were:
George Washington Julian, died 1962, Army of Northern
Virginia, burial place unknown.
Joseph Pierceson Julian, died 1863, POW Alton, Ill. ,
buried Confederate Cemetary, Alton, Ill.
William Horton Howard Julian, died 1964, POW Ft. Del.,
Del. buried Finn's Point Natl. Cem., N.J.
These three brothers were beloved sons of Lewis and Martha Frazier Julian
and grandsons of Tobias and Esther Morgan Julian.
"There is no other legend quite like the Confederate fighting man. He
reached the end of his haunted road long ago. He fought for a
star-crossed cause and in the end he was beaten, but as he carried his
slashed red battle flag into the dusky twilight of the Lost Cause, he
marched straight into a legend that will live as long as the American
people care to remember anything about the American past."
