Below are my notes on Carl AUGUST Edward Juedes from the Deshler, Thayer County, Nebraska area b. 1847. He married Caroline EMILIE Fredricke Harder b. 1857.
Juedes is spelling with the umlat over the u "Judes" in German. August was the name that he commonly went by.
August's obituary states that he received his schooling in Plathe, Germany. "In 1872 he left the old country and came to the United States, locating in the hills of Wisconsin. Four years later, in 1876, he returned to Germany, to be united in marriage with the now surviving widow, Amalia nee Harder, on October, 13, 1876, in the village of Ottendorff, Germany. In the year 1880, he came to the United States, settling in Thayer County, Nebraska, where he made his home until the time of his death, first living on a farm south of Deshler and later residing in town. He attended church in Friedensau, and ever since St. Peter's Lutheran Church came into existence, he has been a member of that church. Mr. and Mrs. Juedes were blessed with seven children, two of whom died at an early age. Two daughters, Miss Anna and Mrs. Minnie Adamson, also preceded their father in death. He leaves to mourn his death , his wife; three sons, William and Gustav, of Gurley, and Ernst, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held last week Wednesday afternoon from the home and St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The Rev. W. Cholcher spoke words of comfort in both English and German. An appropriate selection was rendered by the male choir. Interment was made in the church cemetery."
August Juedes is listed as being a charter member of St. Peter's Congregation in 1888. His photo is shown with the other charter members in a 50th anniversary book.
According to the 1900 Nebraska census, August was a farmer and farmed just south of Deshler, Nebraska in Township 1 North, Range 3 west, section 6. He also had land in Township 1 North, Range 4 West, section 2. According to the 1920 Nebraska census, August was 72 years of age and came to America in 1880 and was naturalized in 1906.
Ship records indicate that August, age 33, came to America on the ship "Gellert" in July of 1880 landing in New York. His port of departure was Hamburg, Germany and Le Havre, France. Their destination was Wisconsin. He came with his wife, Emilie age 23 and baby Friedre (spelling my be incorrect). He was listed as a laborer.
As part of the probate records for Friedrick Harder (father of Amelia Harder Juedes) is a hand written note in German and signed by Amelia Harder and August Judes. The records also contain a handwritten note that appears to be the translation into English the same said note. It contains the seals with one being Eine Halbe Mark and the other with Ottendorf, Naugard on it. The following is the translation:
"Ottendorf 20th Day of June 1880
I came before you in person known as Carl August Edward Judes (had umlat over the u) with my wife Caroline Emilia Fredricke Harder Judes (had umlat over the u) nee Harder and say both that my wife Emilia Harder from her Father, a colonist, Friedrick Harder and his wife Henriette Harder, nee Hopp, that lived at Ottendorf, I Emilia Harder say, hwerewith, that I have got all of my share of my fathers and mothers estate in cash and I henceforth make no claim and I have got nothing coming. This paper and our signature was our own free will.
signed by August Judes (umlat over u) and Emilia Harder
This signature of the above named Judes (umlat over u) with his wife Emilia Judes (umlat over u) nee Harder, was executed before me at Ottendorf this 20th day of June 1880. Saurg, clerk of the court
Seuerz - chairman of the congregation"
There is only one signature so it appears they weren't sure which of the above was correct. Note that the date of this letter is just before Emilia and August arrived in America. The money must have been to pay for their trip over.
Funeral services were held at the home and at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He is buried at Peace Lutheran Cemetery next to his wife.
