"In tracing one's surname through DNA one must use their YDna which is handed down from father to son. In other words females who have no YDna only have MtDna or mitochondrial DNA which is almost useless in tracing their surname. Perhaps you can get a brother, father, uncle, nephew, grand-nephew etc. to have their Y-Dna tested"
While your statement is true that I do not have Y DNA, I am still a product of all my ancestors ,which includes the males
Females have two X chromosomes. One is inherited from the mother (usually a recombination of her pair of X), and the other is from the father without recombination. That means a female likely has some chromosome X segments from her maternal grandfather.
My DNA test was not done to trace my maiden surname of Jude, but was to get an overall view of my makeup and to solidify my paper trail of ancestors . So far I have happily found both maternal and paternal DNA matches from 23andMe, Gedmatch and FTDNA.
I recommend everyone do the DNA test, if not for yourself, but for others in your family to share-besides it is fun !!!! I check my matches everyday!!
