Surnames: Bevins Cannaday or Kennedy Cavins Collins Dempsey Frederick Fulkerson Jones Jude Prince Roberts Robinson Smith Starr Staton Stotts
The following information may be useful to anyone researching the Jude or Frederick family of Southwestern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. The following information is an entry in the Pike Co., KY order book B 3-18 covering years 1831-1843.

“Ordered that a spa be awarded against Joseph Bevins Thomas Cannaday John Jones & Mary Fredrick to appear hear at our September term to show cause why Jacob Fredrick Collins [x’s crossed over the name Frderick] Andrew Collins James Collins John Fredrick and Olley Fredrick poor children shall not be bound out according to law.”

The exact date of this entry is not identified, but information supports the conclusion that it was about 1843.

Conclusion: Mary “Polly” (Roberts) Collins-Jude or Frederick who was the widow of Peter Jude or Frederick could not support her children after her husband Peter died about 1843. It was very common during this era for a court to subpoena a widow who could not financially support her children, thus she was issued a court order to prove she was able to financially support her children. Evidently, she was able to keep some of her Jude or Frederick children including Olley mentioned above and moved in with her mother Olive “Ollie” (Stotts) Roberts. This is supported by the following 1850 Russell Co., VA census entry:

Polly Jude age 41 b. Grayson Co., VA
Olly Jude age 17 female b. Logan Co., VA
Nancy Jude age 13 b. Logan Co., VA
William R. Jude age 8 b. Russell Co., VA
Sarah A. Roberts age 14 b. KY
Charlotte Roberts age 10 b. Russell co., VA
Peggy Roberts age 7 b. Russell Co., VA
Olly Roberts age 85 b. NC

Since William R. Jude shown above was 8 yrs old in 1850, he was born about 1842. Also since the Pike Co., KY order book covered the period between 1831 and 1843, it is logical to conclude that Peter died after 1842 when his son William was born and before 1843 when the entry was made. So Peter died abt. 1843.

No other information is found about Polly’s son William R. Jude or her daughter Ollie.

Polly’s daughter Nancy Jude married James McHenry Prince in Lawrence Co., KY on 3-29-1855.

Polly’s son John Jude or Frederick who was previously mentioned on the Pike Co., KY order book as John Frederick is later identified on the 1850 Wayne Co., VA census as John Jude age 17 (b. 1-7-1832) living in the household of James Starr. James Starr was a wealthy man who never had any children of his own, but he helped raise other people’s children who were not able to do so by themselves. John Jude married Nancy Anne (Staton).

The following is additional information about Polly’s children by an unidentified man with the surname Collins:

1850 Pike Co., KY census:

#156 Jacob Collins age 26 VA
in household of Martin Fulkerson.

#716 Andrew Collins 26 VA
Elizabeth (Smith) 24 KY
Amanda J. 4 KY
Wm. M. 2 KY

This Andrew Collins was a close neighbor to the Joseph Bevins who was listed in the previously mentioned Pike Co, KY order book.

Polly later moved in with her son Andrew Collins since she is listed as living with her son Andrew on the 1860 & 1870 Pike Co., KY census records.

1870 Wayne Co., WV census shows the family of Jacob Collins age 48 and his wife Elizabeth (Cavins?) age 38 and children.

1-11-1847 marriage license Pike Co, KY for Jacob Collins and Elizabeth Ann Cavins.

At this time I don’t have any additional information on Polly’s other son James Collins.

According to all these facts, it's amazing how much of the information handed down from Mrs. Robinson was true. The only possible exception was the story about John Frederick or Jude being abandoned by his mother Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Jude and as a result he was rescued from a fire by James Starr. I have done other research on the Dempsey family which lead me to some research on the Starr family. According to Starr family history, James Starr did not have any children of his own, but was blessed with wealth and took in children whose mothers for whatever reason were unable to raise them. According to the aforementioned court subpoena John Jude or Frederick was ordered by the court to be taken away from his mother or "bound out" to others to raise.

The following entries for the 1850 Logan Co., VA census should provide some more clarity:

83 Ruth Starr 33 F - - VA
John Starr 14 M VA
Henry Starr 9 M VA
Polly Starr 8 F VA
Shelton Starr 4 M VA

522 James Starr 52 M Farmer $3,300 VA
Rebecca Starr 34 F VA
John Jude 17 M VA
Joseph* Dempsey 10 M VA 14 Sep 1850

* Research supports that this Joseph Dempsey is a duplicate of Joseph Dempsey age 10, son of Andrew & Martha (Starr) Dempsey. Joseph was living with his uncle James Starr because James Starr was the brother of Joseph’s mother Martha (Starr), who married Joseph’s father Andrew Dempsey.

The following information details conclusions based on all the previous facts mentioned: John Jude or Frederick who was born 1832 was identified on the aforementioned subpoena about 1843 as "John Frederick". Later he was listed as "John Jude" on the 1850 census. His father Peter Jude or Frederick married in 1831 in Pike Co., KY using the name Peter Jude when he married "Polly" Collins. Collins was the last name of Polly's first husband whose first name remains unidentified. As the 1850 Russell Co., VA census shows, Polly's mother was identified as Olive Roberts. Olive was a Stotts before she married Jacob Roberts. Consequently, the maiden name of Peter's wife Polly was Roberts when she first married the man with the surname Collins. Now if these conclusions aren't nebulous enough there is another fact that can't be ignored and may lead to other conclusions. When Peter Jude or Frederick's father John Jude who was b. abt. 1765 was identified on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census as "John Jude", his nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts. Consequently, Peter Jude's father John Jude had to be connected somehow to Peter Stotts. In my opinion John Jude may have named his son Peter after this Peter Stotts, which may imply Peter Stotts was somehow related to John Jude or his wife Polly whose last name remains unidentified, but some believe her maiden name was Jackson. Based on the information just mentioned, It's also possible her last name was Stotts. What are your thoughts or conclusions on all this information?

Finally according to Jude family history handed down from many generations, the Jude's came to Eastern KY and SW WV from the New River Valley. The New River runs through Surry Co., NC and Grayson Co., VA.
