Hello,
Though I'm no relation, nor is the person for whom I was researching when I came across her name, I wanted to mention some "findings" and ask a question of those who might be connected to the Utah/Idaho family of Juchau.
Martha Emily never married (apparently), but in her 60's, she was living in the home of Silas F. Hamilton, in Portland, Maine. What's interesting is that she was listed in a 1915 directory as "nurse". She must have been close with the family, as she is buried with Silas, his wife, Phoebe, and several children in the family plot at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
What I'm curious about, is the story behind Martha. How come Juchaus never got enumerated? Only the 1880 US Census (of those listed on Ancestry.com) seems to list ANY families of this name. What are the common misspellings? They don't seem to come out using a Soundex search.
My further question is how did Martha come to be in the US? Did she come over with her uncle James Joseph, who first came to Louisiana, then Utah, with some two sons settling later in Idaho?
If any of you happen to know any more about Martha, I'd love to know her story. Not often are those who never married, or died away from the rest of their families, made mention of in genealogical works. Would be interested in remedying that.
Also, came across an interesting bit from London.
"1765 - During a prizefight on Moorfields Street in London, a Swiss coachman named Phil Juchau dies after hitting his head on a paving stone following a cross-buttock throw. The winning fighter was an English butcher named Jack Warren. Warren received £10 for his efforts."
THIS Philiip was born 10-May-1748, St. Marylebone, Middlesex, England, son of one of Martha's direct ancestors, Lewis Charles Juchau, b. 1710/14, d. 07-Jan-1756, Marylebone? who was son of Louis, b. 1690. "Phil" died on 06-Apr-1765, as indicated, above. How he was listed as a Swiss coachman, indicates it might just be his father was from Switzerland, not France or England as some researchers indicate. Further digging does indicate Juchau is likely a Swiss surname.
Cheers,
Jared
