That was my great grandmother. She was not only a MicMac Indian, she was the chief's daughter. It was considered a high betrayal to the tribe based on her ranking. Feel free to ask away with any questions. I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Mary Josselyn - Essex County, England

Mary was married to Peter Gates, but I don't think I have the right birth or death date. The only information I can find says she was born in 1568 and died in 1575, which makes her only 7 when she died. And her son with Peter wasn't born until 1590.
Help???

Many thanks for your research Bob. Carol Josselyn is my mum :) so I have all that information. I'm stuck really at the Fuchs from Munich circa 1850. I guess I will just have to go there and explore the records... Appreciate your thoughts though!

Carol Josselyn is the daughter of -
Doris May Butterworth (b.19th June 1894, d.11th March 1978 aged 83) = John William Josselyn DSC, RN (b.13th November 1900 in Madras, d.14th September 1961 aged 60, m.27th June 1925, son of John Josselyn (b.28th October 1872, d.11th October 1943 aged 70) and Lilian Bella, née Elwes (b.17th January 1879, d.1951 aged 71, m.14th February 1900 in Madrid) daughter of William Weston Elwes, Archdeacon of Madras b.1844, d.22nd May 1901 in India and Arabella Bowden, née Leach b.1841, m.1870, d.1920 in India
I am somewhat unsure about Farquharson/Fuchs. I have attempted to find Carol’s marriage but have failed dismally. I have also tried to find out about Farquharson/Fuchs but again my efforts have come to nothing
Good luck with your family tree
Bob Grenside
Oops. I meant Suffolk. I have no idea why Lincolnshire popped into my head... Genealogy overload.

My mother (Carol) is a Josselyn who married a Farquharson (who was actually a Fuchs; his mother was a Farquharson but that's a long story...), so that's my connection.

Will definitely look you up for a cup of tea and some gravespotting. Very kind of you to offer and would of course love to meet someone whose family was friends with my family.

I live in Amsterdam but I occasionally come over to England and my curious is now piqued so I will put Suffolk/Norfolk high on my list.

Many thanks again,
PiP

Ah that's lovely...

And thanks for the offer of help, but actually you've already been a great help (re Frederic's second wife). I've just started seriously pulling the family tree together and it's all quite overwhelming! I've just been to Scotland to explore the Farquharson side a bit more but I would love to go to Suffolk sometime. It sounds idyllic. But maybe that was just the 20th century ;)

Warm regards,
Pip

Hello again

I am not sure who is in Lincolnshire and we don't have any connection, as far as I know, with the Farquharson family. My connection is with the Murrays, Oswells and Josselyns.
If you ever come down this way, (I am in Norfolk), do get in touch and we can meet up and perhaps visit Suffolk and some of your kins' graves.

Regards
Rosie

Hi PiP
Thanks for the message. I now know quite a lot about the Josselyns/Oswells and have also visited the churchyard at Sproughton, near Ipswich, Suffolk, where quite a few of them are buried.
I took photos of the graves and made a note of their inscriptions and have them in an album.
Lily Oswell was a frequent visitor to my great aunt, Constance Murray Smith, when she was living with her father who was vicar at Great Shefford, near Hungerford, at the turn of the 20thC
If there is anything else I can help with, then let me know.
Regards
Rosie

I am so sorry it has taken years to get back to you. Many things happened and I just didn't get back to the search. My father is Charles Albert Josselyn born in 1915 in Massachusetts according to my birth cert. My mother was Jean Antill they were married in Hartford, Ct. in the late 40s. They were divorced in I think, in 1953. I never meet or heard from my father and was always curious about his family. I will not take long to get back to you if you have any info.
Hi,

I saw your post about the Josselyn family in Dorchester, MA.
I have a Herb Josselyn and a Ruth in the family from that area.
Herbert Charles Josselyn was married to Mary Elizabeth Cheever and one of his sons, Charles was married to a woman named Ruth.
My understanding is Charles and Ruth had two children, a son Herbert Charles and a daughter (Janet?)

If this is your family, I would love to hear from you. We are a bunch of Josselyn cousins who descend from Herbert and Mary Elizabeth and have been
Looking for Charles' family. If I am not mistaken, (because there were several Ruth Josselyn's) I think Ruth lived in Hingham when she was quite elderly.
I seem to recall my mom bringing us over for visits.

Hebert Charles Josselyn was born about 1883 and married Mary Elizabeth Cheever
They had 6 sons:
Herbert George b. 1909 Married Dorothy (my grandparents)
Edwin Marshall b. 1912 Married Virginia
Charles Albert b. 1914 Married Ruth
William Hobart b. 1918 Married Margaret
John died in infancy
Frederick Howland b. 1923 Married Lorraine

Hope to hear from you.

Judie Cole

I don't know how accurate my info is, as I am trying to recall something...

I think there was an internet or newspaper article about a woman who married a Josselyn. Her name may have been Rose. In any event, if I recall she was born a Micmac Indian and was expelled from the tribe for marrying a white man in the first half of this century. (I think her daughter posts on these boards from time to time)

Years later the article was about how she was quite elderly and the tribe had found her and returned all her rights in a ceremony.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I am not sure if you have heard the story of your greatgrandfather Asa and the "scandel", but I have some copies of the Boston Globe from 1903 that tell the story. If you don't have them I can send them to you.

There is a Thatcher Island Association and you can travel to the island on Saturdays. You would have been able to stay in the lighthouse keepers home, but they are doing renovations. I would contact themanyway and tellthem who you are, they may make a special allowance or give you a special tour.

Feel free to email me with any questions.

I have no connection to any of these families. This was taken from Vol. 14, No. 1 of "The Second Boat" in an article entitled "Passengers on the Ship 'Increase' - 1635":

In April of 1635, the ship 'Increase' departed London, England, enroute to Boston in the Massachusetts Colony, where it arrived the end of July of that year under command of Robert Lea, Master. Passengers on this voyage of the increase had differing destinations. Some were bound for Newtown (Cambridge) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and others intended to settle in Connecticut. Following, from the ship's manifest, is a partial list of passengers and, where known, their destination.

George Bacon, age 43, to Hingham, MA
Samuel Bacon, 12
Susan Bacon, 10
John Bacon, 8
Thomas Josselyn, husbandman, to Hingham, MA
Rebecca Josselyn, 3, of Roxford Co., Essex
Dorothy Josselyn, 18
Nathaniel Josselyn, 6
Mary Josselyn, 6
Mary Josselyn, 1
Elizabeth Ward, 38, servant
Isaac More, 13, servant
William Ruscoe, 41, husbandman, to Cambridge, MA
Rebecca Ruscoe, 40, Billerica, Co., Essex
Sarah Ruscoe, 9
Mary Ruscoe, 7
Samuel Ruscoe, 5
William Ruscoe, 1
Matthew Marvin, husbandman, to Hartford, CT
Matthew Marvin, 8
Mary Marvin, 6
Sarah Marvin, 3
Hannah Marvin, 6 mo.
John Warner, 30, servant

Also listed were these families: Page, Andrews, Blogett, Chittenden, Morse, Dalton, John Davis, Ireland, Payne, Stone, Ayers, Kilbourne and Buck, plus 22 other individual passengers (unnamed).

Sources:
Planters of the Commonwealth by Charles Edward Bans (1972 reprint)
Migration to Connecticut, by Malcomb Seymour
Vexed and Troubled Englishmen by Carl Bridgenbaugh
Congregational Commonwealth, by Mary J.A. I am descended from the Joseph Josselyn line. In tracing his roots back, it looks to me like they both come from Ralph Josselyn
of Roxwell, Essex Co., England...am I wrong?
Named for his grandfather, Thomas, who brought his family to Mass in 1635 on the "Increase". Thomas's son, Abraham, came later with his wife, Beatrice. Your Thomas was born in Maine along with an older brother, Henry, and a sister while the family was living for about seven years near an English relative, Henry Josselyn, who became Deputy Governor of Maine. Brother Henry was told by his father to teach Thomas a skill [blacksmithing].--might want to look into the Josselin Society of Essex, England.

They lived in Natick in the 1950s next door to my grandparents on a deadend street beside the cemetery.
The Josselyn's were Indians. They took my mother and aunt each summer to a reservation/village in Nova Scotia where they watched them building canoes, etc.
I don't know the relationship to my family, but supposedly there is Indian blood from Nova Scotia somewhere. I have yet to find it though.
TIA
Judy G.

From what I understand she was a Blackfoot Indian, but I don't know her maiden name. Any info on the Josselyn clan would be appreciated.
