I am searching for the parents of my ancestor James Gerolamy. I am convinced he anglicized his surname when he arrived in Upper Canada in 1784 as a United Empire Loyalist. During the early years here he was variously known as Gerrolldamon, Gerollomon, Jerolomy., Gerolderman, Jerrolomay and Jerolomon. By the early 1820's he seems to have settled on Gerolamy. In any case, in his discharge papers from the Glengarry Light Infantry Regiment after the War of 1812 he listed his place of birth as the Parish of Argyle, Charlotte County, New York and born about 1767 (possibly earlier). He and all of his descendants in various censuses list their racial origins as German, with many grandchildren and great grandchildren named Conrad, Elida, Augustus etc. I am therefore thinking that his parents may have been Palatine Germans who came to New York via Ireland in the late 1750's. A neighbor of his, David Dulmage, was born in Ireland in 1746 emigrated to America arriving in Charlotte County in 1758. David was his future father-in-law.
I have seen reference to several Jerolomons such as Nicholas Jerolomon among others who lived in the area around Albany but have no idea if they are related. I note that were many families with this surname living in and around New York City and across the river in New Jersey.
In any event we know he was born In Charlotte County but have no idea who his parents were. Seems I have hit the proverbial "brick wall". Can anyone shed some light on who his parents might have been and when did they arrive in America? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: Another mystery is that James stated that he was born "in or near the Town of Camden". David Dulmage and his relatives also lists the area they settled in as Camden, Charlotte County. However I have not been able to find a town in what was known as Charlotte County, now Washington County or Albany County. The closest town by that name is some distance west in Oneida County.
