One account says that ironically he had sent his personal surgeon, Dr. D. W. Yandell, off to attend to wounded soldiers, some of them Union soliders who had been taken prisoner. If the surgeon had been with Johnston, he might have survived. Also, since the wounded artery was in his leg and the blood ran into his boot and was not obvious at first, no one was able to apply a tourniquet in time.
