Arthur W. Joerg Fatally Stricken
Overcome by heat while working in the garden at his home, 1181 Payne avenue, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Arthur Joerg, 54, a well known resident and former city official, died five hours later.
Born in North Tonawanda, Joerg was a leader in the Gratwick section of the city. He served for 18 ½ years as a city official. He held the offices of president of the Common Council, chairman of the Civil Service Commission and fire commissioner.
He was a member of the Gratwick Hose company, of which he was a past president, the North Tonawanda Firemen's Benevolent association, the Salem Evangelical and Reformed church and Sutherland Lodge, No. 826, F. & A. M.
At the time of his death he was employed as superintendent of the foundry of the American Radiator company in Buffalo, where he had worked many years.
Surviving are his wife, Matilda, nee Gau; two sons, Richard, of the Town of Wheatfield and Arthur W., Jr., of North Tonawanda; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Meyers, of North Tonawanda and Ruth Joerg at home; a grandson, Thomas Meyers; two brothers, Frank and Andrew, and three sisters, Mrs. Fredericka Dawson, Mrs. Ida Roy and Mrs. Warren Olcott, all of the Tonawandas.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. from the residence. The Rev. Walter F. Hetzel will officiate and burial will be in Elmlawn.
