Are you still searching for info on Richard Joel and Betty Humphrey? I live in the area and have been doing research on local African American and Native American families. I am also seeking info on the Joel's of Pembroke. I have a hunch that Richard is a Mattakeeset Indian of Pembroke Hanson area. The reasons I think this is that : a William Joel is listed as a Mattakeeset in Earl's 1861 report on Massachusetts' Indians and Gad Hitchcock married Richard and Bettey. Gad was known to marry African Americans and Native Americans of the area when other ministers/pastors/priests would not. If my hunch is true it will be difficult to find much more info on Ricard Joel. The Mattakeesets disbanded in 1757 when Abigail Quason and Queen Patience (grand daughter of Josiah Wampatuck) sold the remaining Pembroke and Hanson lands (about 340 acres) to Israel Turner and Nehemiah Cushing. The Mattakeesets protested the sale of their lands to no avail. The "guardians" that were appointed to look after the Mattakeesets approved the sale of land and the remaining Indians were probably booted off their own land. Some would move in with other local families where they were servants and some became transient. Richard Joel served in the revolutionary war for three years and died Feb. 19, 1830.
