CHild #3 Paul b 1 Nov 1856, Ockholm, Schleswig, mar 7 Feb 1879 Eliza Repenn, (b 9 Oct 1859 to Claus and Catrina/Catherine (Ehler) Repenn, Catrina a sister of the above Carl Ehler) at the Renfield Hotel, called "Farmer's Home," Toledo, Tama Co, Ia by JP EM Bielby. Child #4 Catharina Margareta SOPHIA, mar 29 Jun 1867 to August Meier/Meyer, by BHA Hennington, JP, (Clinton co mar recs). Sophia d by 1873, per Johann's will.
Johann bought 40 acres, sec 6, extreme NW Center twp, Clinton co for $100 from John H Glahn, Mar Gloe, wife Catherine Gloe. He bought land from the government for $1.25/acre; also cem plots in the Glahn cem, just N of his land, in SW Deep Creek twp, near GooseLake. Other people are buried in all the plots in Glahn, so his plots may have been sold to others at his death to settle his estate. More research needed about that. Anyone find anything on that?
Johann and his second wife drowned 6 March 1873 trying to cross Deep Creek in downtown Charlotte while the bridge was out. A Mr. Paulsen drowned with them, per a Paulsen descendant, told to local historian Kermit Ketelsen. Johann's probate recs say they were buried about 11 Mar, 1873. No stone for them in area cemeteries, either. Possibly buried without a stone on his farm, lots of wooded area.
Johann's will, dated 18 July, 1872, says he is 58 yrs old, bequeaths his estate "to my beloved wife Christine, for the term of her natural life, and in lieu of her dower. I make it however her duty, so support and maintain and to sufficiently clothe Matthias Kraag, the brother of my first wife, for and during the remainder of his natural life." This clarifies that Anna Kraag, mother of Dora, was his first wife, and Christina _______, was the second wife, who drowned with him. Does anyone have info about which was the mother of Paul?
After the death of his current wife, Johann left half his estate to his son, Paul, 1/4 to daus Dorothea and Wilhelmine Mathilde, and $1 to the child of his deceased dau Catharina Margaretha Sophia. (Johann had sponsored the baptism of this child, Johann Wilhelm Meier, 7 Aug, 1868, at St Paul's Lutheran, Center Grove, a rural ch long gone, recs at St John's Lutheran, Lyons, now Clinton, Clinton co Ia.)
Johann's will directs that his heirs "pay to the said Matthias Kraag, for the term of his natural life, annually the sum of fifty dollars, and contribute to the payment of this annuity in the same proportion as they participate in my estate." The probate info states Johann was a resident of Centre twp at his death, notes were paid out of estate, including pledge by Johann to Lutheran Evangelical church at Charlotte to build church and school, asks land be sold to settle. At settlement, dau Dorathea Carstensen was res of Green Island, Jackson co, Ia, Wilhelmina Mathilda Ehlers, res at or near Tama City, Tama co, Paul Jochimsen, res at or near Charlotte. (Mathilda probably went westward with the Ehlers/Repenn clan when they left Clinton co in 1871.)
Paul received his settlement Jan 1875, and May 20 he left for Woodbury co with sis Dora and her husband Godber Carstensen, Paul herding the 50 head of cattle. They arrived in Tama July 4, landing in Greene co Aug 11. They decided to stop there, pitched tents, and hauled lumber for a shack. Paul returned to Clinton/Jackson counties, then returned to Tama co in 1876, working on farms in the area, including John Backen's, whom the family had known from Clinton co
Paul wed Eliza Repenn Feb 7 1879 in Toledo, Tama co, and had ten children: Anna, 1879, Carl John "Johnnie" 1882, Ted 1884, Alma and Emma 1888, Ernest 1890, Clara stillborn, Carl 1893, Claus Christian Bernhardt "Ben," 1897, Minnie 1900. Paul died 14 April, 1940, Poewshiek co, bu Maple Grove cem. Was charter member St Johns Lutheran, Tama.
Eliza Repenn was b 9 Oct 1859 near Lyons, Clinton co, to Claus and Cathrina (Ehlers) Repenn, d 2 Jan 1937, Tama.
Claus Repenn/Rethpenn, b 12 Apr, 1816, Holstein, Ger (under Danish rule sometimes), mar 7 Mar 1840 to Catherin Ehler, rec at Ev. Luth ch, Giekau, Ger., d 28 Oct, 1900, bu Maple Grove cem, Tama co. Ia. Claus, Catherine and their 5 eldest ch came to US June, 1853, youngest 3 ch born Clinton co, including Lena b near Preston in 1855. They lived in Deep Creek twp in 1856 census, owner of 80 acres, same place thru 1870 census. ( A Margaret Repenn, b Sept 1860 lives in the household on July 1860 census, could be grandchild.)
Claus Repenn's wife Catrina/Catherin was b 29 Sept 1818, Holstein, to Friderich and Christina Wilhelmina Osbahr, and d 15 Mar 1904, Sheridan Twp, Poweshiek co, Ia., bu Maple Grove cem.
Catherin (Ehlers) Repenn's father Friederich Ehler/Ehlert was b 20 Jun 1789 to Joachim and Cathrina (Moller) Ehler of Satjendorf/Satziendorf, (?Holstein?). Friederich Ehler wed Christina Wilhelmina Osbahr 15 Nov, 1817. Both came to US Jun of 1853 with at least the 5 youngest of their 10 children, and their eldest, Elsabe Catrina, (who wed Claus Repenn in 1840). Friederich died after 1870, before 1880 (?), per census recs. Living in 1860 in hh of son Peter, Deep Creek twp, Clinton co
Friederich Ehler's wife Christina Osbahr was b 14 Sept 1797 in Holsein, (per Catharina, census recs) to Friderich and Christina Malena (Schneklot/Schneekloth) Osbahr, he of Emkendorf. Christina (Osbahr) Ehler d bet 1860 and 1870 (?) per census recs, only Frederick, 82 yrs age, living in hh of son Frederick, Deep Creek twp, Clinton co.on 1870 census. Both buried where???
I have ch of Friederich and Christina (Osbahr) Ehler and of Claus and Catherin (Ehler) Repenn, spouses, etc. Would love to hear from anyone with more info or willing to do more research, so we can work together...haven't touched German records yet. Please email me with any errors you find or new info. Anxious to hear from researchers, also anyone with photo of Ehlers willing to send copy, I'll pay. RuthAnn.
