CANFIELD – Reverend Arthur Cameron Joachim, 85, who died Thursday evening, Nov. 25, 2010, at Saint Elizabeth Health Center.

Rev. Joachim was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio the son of the late Arthur Clarence and Marion Cameron Joachim.

He graduated from South High School in 1943. Rev. Joachim enlisted in the Navy during World War II, where he served on the USS Kadashan Bay CVE-76, an escort aircraft carrier and was a Navy shellback. He and his wife attended 14 ships reunions and was a gangplanker of the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C.

After returning from the service, Arthur attended and graduated from Youngstown College. He had also attended Oberlin College. In 1951, Arthur entered the seminary and graduated from McCormick Presbyterian Seminary in Chicago.

Rev. Joachim was a minister for 40 years, serving first at the Glen Lake Presbyterian Church, Glen Lake, Minn. from 1951 to 1957, the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown for 12 years, the Highland Heights Presbyterian Church in Highland Heights from 1969 to 1975, the First Presbyterian Church of Freemont from 1975 to 1981, the First Presbyterian Church of Toronto, Ohio from 1981 to 1986, the Wickliffe Presbyterian Church in Austintown from 1986 until his retirement in 1990.

Rev. Joachim was a member of the Eastminster Presbytery, the Sulgrave Lodge No. 696 F & A.M., the area Civil War and World War II Roundtables, The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and the YMCA Central Branch in Youngstown.

He helped organize a fraternity at Youngstown College, he served on the committee that organized Camp Joseph Badger Meadows in Hartford.
Rev. Joachim was very athletic. He was a avid runner and belong to several running clubs, running in 2700 races, since 1981 and was inducted into the Youngstown Road Runners Hall of Fame. He also, played handball where he enter the area championship tournaments, eight times in the 1950s and 1960s at the downtown YMCA, winning seven of them. He also played racquetball.

He leaves his wife, the former Louise Kyle of 60 years, whom he married Dec. 27, 1949; a son, Rev. David Barry (Amy) Joachim of Boardman, Ohio; a daughter, Lynn (Wendell) Bell of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren, Courtney Kyle Joachim, Alexandra Lynnee Joachim, Melody Gail Joachim, Luke McClelland Joachim, Andrew Cameron (Whitney) Bell and Rebecca Ellen Bell.

Besides his parents, Rev. Joachim was preceded in death by a son Daniel Kyle Joachim.

Friends may call on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 from 5 to7 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church and on Monday for one hour prior to the service.

There will be funeral services on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman

The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, OH 44512 or the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

Arrangements are being handle by Thompson Funeral Home in Boardman.
