I am searching for JOAs who may have immigrated from Bavaria in the 1860's, in particular siblings/half siblings of Andreas JOA, born in Binsfeld, Bavaria, Germany and immigrated (?as a stowaway) to USA in 1868. We know more family came and possibly stayed in the eastern states.
Thanks for any information. Rose

This may be a long shot, but I am descended from a Louis Joh that appears to have come over in the 1860s and settled in Montgomery Alabama. The census states he came from Baden, but was working for his future father-in-law, Peter Schwartz who was from Bavaria according to the census. I have no idea at this time how he got there. I haven't seen many ships lists with this surname. Perhaps I should try the surname JOA and see what I come up with. Where did Andreas settle?

Andreas Joa was b. 7 Sep 1843 in Bensfeld, Bavaria and d. 7 Nov 1923 in Richmond, MN. USA
Presumed to have been a stowaway on a "mercantile" ship and got found and presumed to have been put to work to pay for passage. Naturalization indicate no ship or ports of departure or entry. Presumed to have gone AWOL to escape Prussian Army. Presumed to have reached MN via Ohio.
Not a very sound "history" re his travels, sorry.

If you click on Baden you will find some JOH's. No JOA tho.
Good Luck.
