JEWKES in Dudley, Worcestershire, England

My ancestor James JEWKES was born in about 1800 in Dudley, Worcestershire, England. He married a Mary, and the family were listed on the 1841 census as follows:

1841. Grey Stone Street, Dudley
-------------------------------

James JEWKES, 41, stone miner, yes [born in this county]
Mary, 48, yes
Ann, 20, yes
Phoebe, 19, yes
James, 16, stone miner, yes
Mary, 14, yes
Sarah, 7, yes
Joseph HICKMAN, stone miner, 19, yes

[Next Door]
Thomas JEWKES, 40, bricklayer, yes
Elizabeth, 35, no
Daniel, 10, yes
Mary, 7, no
John, 5, no
Edward, 1, no

Presumably Thomas was James' brother, though I haven't proved this yet. Ann ended up marrying Joseph, who I assume was lodging with the family. The date of the marriage was 29th April 1844, according to the IGI, though I don't yet have their marriage certificate. Joseph and Ann are my direct ancestors.

I have found possible baptismal dates for James and Mary's girls from film 7133450 of the IGI:

Ann JEWKES chr. 24th Dec 1820, Dudley, James JEWKES/Mary
Phoebe JEWKES chr. 19th Feb 1837, Dudley, James JEWKES/Mary
Mary JEWKES chr. 19th Feb 1837, Dudley, James JEWKES/Mary
Sarah JEWKES chr. 19th Feb 1837, Dudley, James JEWKES/Mary

If anyone is interested in these people please email me at antonia_barker@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Hi All,
I am trying to locate information on a Sarah JEWKES b. abt. 1804 (according to the 1841 UK Census), She married my ancestor, James PLANT - according to the IGI - abt. Feb 28, 1825 In Dudley, Worcs., England. I do have a copy of her death certificate.
I have tried to locate the marriage certificate for this couple in the Dudley area and was told by the Dudley Registry Office and also a researcher hired, that no such marriage existed in the area, on that date given.
Can anyone enlighten me as to where the information came from, and where the couple actually married?
James PLANT was born in Tipton in 1803, his second wife is listed as Sarah WARDLEY - I do have a copy of that marriage cert.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Marion

Foto of Jewkes in Orangeville Band around 1907

This is from my wife's grandma from Utah. Grandma's dad Fred W Reid was playing in this band. Thought Jewkes on the picture could be your ancestors.

http://free.prohosting.com/~servis/genealogy/orangeville_ban...

http://free.prohosting.com/~servis/genealogy/orangeville_ban...

jewkes family

Hi Diana:
Received your message and like you said there is so much to write about...perhaps doing so directly through our E-mail would be easier, what do you think?
Yes, you are correct. My father Sam's father was William Jewkes, his mother was Melissa Jane Guyman. William (my grandfather, was one of 3 children born to Samuel and Sophia Lewis. Samuel also had a 2nd wife at that time, Mary. Samuel and Mary had several children. I can give you all the specifics at a later date. Most of these people were raised in Orangeville, where they built and ran the first grist mill in the area.

My husband and I live in St. Petersburg, Florida, and have lived here the past 15 years. We have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Our daughter, husband and 2 grandchildren live about 10 minutes from us here in St. Pete. Our two sons both live in Penna. Our oldest son (46) is a single, very happy bachelor, our youngest (36) is married to a new doctor who just graduated from medical school and is serving her residency in Hershey, Pa.

I have two surviving sisters, both residing in the Salt Lake City area. My sister Violet Lee is a widow, with 3 daughters, grandchildren & great grandchildren in the area. My younger sister, Hazel Marie lost one of her two sons (age 42 to cancer a year ago. My oldest sister, Belle Rose died this past Christmas Eve, and our only brother, Vern, was killed in a car accident 16 years ago, leaving his wife and 3 children.

I remember your father well and have a letters he wrote to me many years ago , tucked away in my sourveniers.

Well, this is enough for this time. I do have quite a bit of Jewkes genology...so I will be happy to help with any info you might want.
Take care, June

family origins

My father is from Worcester England and I have relatives in Stafford too. We came to live in Australia when I was a teenager and I have discovered distant relatives (Jewkes) here. If you have any connection with these two counties in England, we will probably find we are related somewhere along the line. Do please contact me, I would love to pass on what I know of the origins of our name.
