Karen,
I am sorry I am so late in answering but I to am going to Watertown the first three weeks of July and am trying to get all of my paperwork in order for the trip which will be heavy on genealogy research. I had a couple of items that I wanted to pass on to you but have not been able to locate them.
Abram Jewett appears as a private on a muster roll for Col. Tuttle's Militia Regiment for March 1813. This was prior to the Second Battle of Sackets Harbor, May 13, 1813, War of 1812 Abram's brother Nathan also appears as a private in the same unit and muster roll. A third Jewett, Henry, also appears as a sergeant (possibly first sergeant). I can not positively identify Henry but I believe he is a first cousin. There was also brothers, Benjamin and Samuel Jewett, who settled in the Utica, Oneida County area in the 1780s/90s who were also first cousins.
In your search for your Abram be aware that the names Abram/Abraham were used interchangeably and there were at least three other Abram/Abrahams at the same time. Nathan Jewett, Abram's brother, had a son named Nathan Abram b. 4/12/1807 went missing during the Mexican War (1846-1848). Nathan Abram had a son named Abram b. 11/22/1832 d. 8/12/1883. My great great grandfather was Abram Jewett b. 1819 d. 6/18/1893.
On your reference to Abraham being in Fort Moultrie in 1830, the only thing I could fine on a Fort Moultrie was a Fort Moultrie that originated in the Revolutionary War on an Island in Charleston, SC and was one of the main forts involved in the bombardment of Fort Sumter and starting the Civil War. William's death in Mexico in 1847 would indicate that he was probably in the Mexican
War.
I hope that with what I have to say next that you do not feel that I am being presumptuous or that I am putting my nose where it does not belong. You have stated that your family has not talked about your ancestors and it is difficult to find genealogy. The Jewetts who contributed the obituaries to the Jewett Family of America for inclusion in their quarterly are in all likely hood members of the JFA and are interested in their ancestry/heritage. They live in your area and I feel they would share if you were to contact them. I just wish I had access to my Jewett relatives.
I have much more narrative material I would like to share but this message board only allows GEDCOMs and photo forwards so I will need to have an email address to share anything further.
