Kenneth R. Jerauld
UNADILLA — Kenneth R. Jerauld, 91, of R.D. 1, Meadow Valley Park, Unadilla, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at his home. Mr. Jerauld was a resident of Otego for 48 years before moving to Unadilla in 1993.
He was born April 26, 1907, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Ray G. Jerauld and Clara Barton Rome Jerauld.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary Hoppe Jerauld on May 6, 1994. He is survived by three sons, Ronald K. and Joan of Berkshire, Walter R. of Edmeston and Lloyd A. and Judi of Cazenovia; three daughters, Linn J. Collins of Sidney and Cazenovia, Elaine J. and Denton Reed of Unadilla and Ellen J. and Paul Osborne of Sidney; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Carolyn Albert.
He moved from Deposit to Otego in 1944 while working at Scintilla in Sidney. He retired as the street and water commissioner for the village of Otego in 1966. After his retirement, he was employed by Bookhout Funeral Home for 14 years.
He joined the Otego Fire Department in 1944 and served as captain. He was a charter member of the Otego Emergency Squad and held the position of lieutenant. He served as a village trustee from 1974-1980 and served many years as the village peace officer where he was known to many as "Sneaky Pete."
Ken was an active member of the Otego United Methodist Church for the 44 years serving in a variety of capacities including the administrative council and board of trustees.
Ken joined the Pennsylvania State Grange in 1926 and has been a Grange member for over 72 years. As a long-time member of the Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange No. 1417, he held the position of master from 1985-1987 and was treasurer in 1992. He served on the Executive Committee and the Regional Membership Directors of New York State Grange Membership Committee.
His commitment to both the Grange and the church kept him active until his very recent health decline.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Otego United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otego United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 57, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
