Attempting to verify that Albert Durant (born 1867, father William, mother Sarah Seeley of Oronoco, Olmsted County, Minnesota) is my grandfather, Bert Durant. I believe William to be the son of Samuel and Alma Ferris Durant. Sarah may be the daughter of James and Mary Seeley of Crawford County, Pennsylvania. I believe William and Celista Jenne Durant had four sons (Francis, Charles, Henry and Leonard before William's marriage to Sarah. Any information on Albert or these families would be greatly appreciated.

I'm aware that two Noah Jenneys are supposed to have served in the Revolution. As I said, there is no credible evidence to separate them, but there is credible evidence that shows they were the same man. Those "government" gravestones are issued to anyone who orders them as long as there is proof of service, and in this case, I wonder if this is actually a DAR marker. As far as I know, gov. markers for Rev. War soldiers are fairly modern, but I'm not sure of that. They certainly weren't doing that when Noah died. In any case, proof of burial place is not needed. It's unlikely the marker was there in 1907, which is why he wasn't included at the time, and the installment of the marker after (by 1930) may be why his name appears on cemetery lists afterward. I can easily imagine someone applying to the DAR assumed he died in Hartland (there were Jennes who were in Hartland after the Revolution including Lot, formerly of Windsor, and Job), and someone else knew he moved away, died and was buried in NY. It's a simple mistake. Assumptions like that were very common in genealogy before the digital age. But now with all the evidence available to us, it no longer makes sense to separate these men. If other evidence is found that refutes what I'm saying, I'd be happy to say I'm wrong. But incomplete DAR applications and a questionable gravestone are low on the credibility scale.

There are TWO Noah Jenne/Jennys who have been credited with Rev War service and perhaps the same service.

One is the Noah of Windsor VT & Scipio NY. A DAR member descends from son Ansel (see 1826 will abstract at other Noah post here). Another descends from son Job (d. 1798) (Member: Adelle Whitby Olney Nat'l #: 554170 Ancestor #: A062246). The DAR has flagged BOTH applications as "Future Applicants Must Prove Correct Service".

The other is the Noah buried at Hartland VT in the Jenne Cemetery, per the Vermont Deaths DB right here at Ancestry which images a town clerk certified inventory dated 1930. The card notes "Rev War" service with US Government headstone. It has no further info but the headstone suggests that there's info somewhere in Hartland about this man.

Now, BOTH Noahs may have served in the ARW, but which one served the service cited in both DAR applications?

Just making a note that I have (1) no further info on either Noah, and that (2) the Noah d. 1829 is by the terms of will (see NEHGS DB "Abstracts of Wills, Admins. and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835," p. 351 {name spelled as JAME} the father of "five" sons Samuel, John, Ansel, Noah & Isaac Newton, and "three" daughters Sally Patchen, Polly Spencer & Bethiah Landon/Sandon.

The DAR has accepted descent from Noah through Ansel, but now has NJ's file marked: Future Applicants Must Prove Correct Service. Presumably someone has noticed the 1760 bdate issue.

I'm going to try to straighten out why I have 2 handles here at Ancestry.

Hi Julie,

Per your posting of 10 Jul 2010. I did a lot of research to come up with this, See attachment. I hope it come through ok.

The Wintermantel’s have a long history which goes back for quite sometime.

Approximately in 1967 I started putting together my family tree, starting with my mother’s side. My uncle who was helping me at the time thought it would be wonderful if I also did my father’s side. Over the next ten to fifteen years I worked with a Mormon genealogical researcher who opened up the tree back to the time of The Thirty Years War, and along with a seventh cousin twice removed. There were originally three brothers from Switzerland. One settled in Austria, the second stayed in Switzerland, and the third settled in Germany (The Black Forest area). The family (originally were Swiss. Not German, originally) while in Switzerland were connected to nobility, and were Royal Swiss Knights.

There is no doubt that there are many Wintermantel’s scattered in many countries. After years of research I am convinced that the name stands out like an eight ball on the pool table.
On the Family Coat of Arms “Wintermantel” means “overcoat” in german.

The Family Coat Of Army, and the church where they were located was retrived, but the church was destroyed in the Second World War.

Regards, P.W.

P.S.
Hallo,

my name is one of these You are looking for. If You look into our german internet You easily will find the family tree of simon schmidlin, a swiss man, who emigrated to bischoffingen shortly after the 30 years war. Nearly all the names - including schmidlin - You are looking for are included in this big family tree. a good part of the big schmidlin family lives nowadays in toldedo/ohio. for my part, my great grand father johann martin schmidlin was a pianomaker who went to lahr, where he founded a musical shop. his son hermann went to london before the first world war. this is why i am in fact a quarter english, a quarter north german and a half south german, and the name of swiss origin. I have a big file of about 700 people in my computer. If You need any help please contact me.

kind regards

Harald M.
Hi Walter from Boetzingen,
Was your Jenne family originally from Bischoffingen? If so, we might be distant cousins. The earliest Jenne that I have in my database is Matthias Jenne, son of Sebastian Jenne, who married Anna Maria Schmidlin on 19 Nov 1737. She may have been the widow of Martin Ernst, but I am not sure. And I could not find children for this couple. Anna Maria Schmidlin was probably the daughter of Conrad Schmidlin and Barbara Kublin, and granddaughter of Simon Schmidlin. So she would be the younger sister of Hans Conrad Schmidlin, my direct line, making her a cousin line to me.

Thanks for the info that April, Birmele/Birmelin, Drexler, Rieflin, Schmiedlin, Schmidt, and Sexauer are still in Bischoffingen. Since you live fairly close, did you happen to attend the Bischoffingen 1000 Year Celebration last year? I would have enjoyed a trip there at that time, but was not able to go then.

Julie Schmiedlin Edwards
jedwards@umich.edu
Thanks for the reply. I think Paul Wintermantel got in touch with me thru the mail in around 1984. I always did have an interest in family trees and was really surprised to hear of him. After awhile I realized Wintermantel was quite a common name. As a kid I went on vacation to around Scrantomn PA where we met others with the W name.
The Wintermantel who came to the US in 1850 was from Durchhausen, Baden Wuerttemberg and most of the Wintermantels trace most of their stuff back to Germany from Catholic Morman records.

I have a tree going on that ancestory com site by the name ''Wintermantel and Ehmann family'' and shows my side of the family. Some of the families had 10 or more children with half of them dying in infancy and the same names repeated many times ex. Maria Anna, Johannes etc.

Robert W

Noah Jenne/Jenney of VT and NY

This is in response to the idea that Noah Jenney of Windsor Co., VT, who served in the Revolution, was different from the Noah who lived in Scipio, NY.

I see no good reason not to think Noah, son of Samuel of Hartland, was in the Revolution and moved to Scipio. The transcription of gravestones at the Jenneville Cemetery in Hartland doesn't include one for Noah. His name is inserted on an online list that represents several site surveys done since 1907. He is only presumed to be buried there with no explanation.

The Jenney genealogy claims Noah of Scipio, son of Samuel of Hartland/Windsor, married Persis Capen about 1789 in Windsor. The 1790 Windsor census lists Samuel, Noah and Lot Jenney. Hartland and Windsor are neighboring towns. Samuel had a documented son named Lot. There were Capens in Windsor in that year. Noah and Persis Jenney supposedly have gravestones in Scipio, with full dates of death, ages at death and there is a description of his grave being marked as a veteran. They are probably buried in a small family cemetery, thus the "Jenney Cemetery." Noah of Scipio's first son was Samuel and his second daughter was Bethia, the names of the parents of Noah of Hartland/Windsor. The circumstantial evidence is substantial enough to assume that there is only one Noah involved.

There is no birth record given in the Jenney genealogy for Noah. He is placed among Samuel and Bethia's children between the recorded baptisms of other children in 1763 and 1769. That there isn't a baptismal record for him isn't surprising, especially since it likely took place in Dartmouth. Baptism records are inconsistent there.

Boys under 16 did serve in the Revolution, despite whatever rules were in place. I personally know that Abner Jenne/Jenney/Jennings of Fairhaven served with his father Capt. Henry Jenne/Jenney/Jennings when he was in his early to mid teens and received a pension. I thought this might have been unique, but it wasn't. This subject has been discussed elsewhere on the internet and there are other documented, early-teen boys who served. Even without proof of this service, you would have to believe that all the captains of militia companies demanded proof of birth from their local volunteers. Unlikely, especially if they looked older for their age. They also didn't necessarily have such proof.

My name is Gary Palmer Pitlo. My Mother who is now deceased is Lillian I.(Chapman) Pitlo. My mother's mother, my grandmother, was Laura Mabel (Jenne) Chapman. Laura's father was Ira Earl Jenne and her mother was
Martha Olson. Ira Jenne's father was Newton Jenne and his mother was Sarah Durant. Newton Jenne's father was Leonard Jenne and his mother was Mercy Pope and on and on. We can currently trace our Jenne family line back to about the early 1200's or further.

I would be very interested in receiving any and all information and pictures of my Jenne family line since my wife and I have the goal of compiling a Jenne Family History Book.

We just recently, as of July 2009, completed the development of our Chapman Family History Book that ended up being about 550 pages in length and about 5 pounds in weight.
Hi, I was wondering if you have ever seen the Jenne book? I also noticed you are researching Camerons and Pearson's from New York. Would they be from upstate New York? I am a Jennings who's name was changed from Jenne/Jenney after the Revolutionary war. Eva Ethel Jenne was born June 30,1895 in Colby Kansas to Charles Newton Jenne and Julia Ann Eastlow. In answer to a question someone else had, She moved to Ill. because her mothers family was from there and it appears that they moved back there cause that is where her mother died.

jjretired@live.com

Can you tell me where the Jenney cemetery is at in Scipio? I am a Jennings a descendent of the Jenney/Jenne family. Why I am asking is that on my mothers side her grandfather came to Scipio with his parents from Ireland and I think its ironic that both sets of family had someone in the Scipio area. My Jennings/Jenney/Jenne family wound up in Webster New York where they are buried in the Union Hill Cemetery. I have been to Scipio but have never seen the Jenney cemetery.

I have a Eugene Swift Jenne in my family History. He married Martha Beard. Eugene was Born (according to my records) Oct 1845 and died 1919 in Oregon. He was there with his brother Platoff Pulaski Jenne who married Martha Sister Sarah Belle Beard. I know that they are buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. The only information that I have on Eugene and Platoff is that they had a brother named Commodore and their mother's intials are E. G. Jenne. (Taken from the 1880 Census)
If you can fill in some blanks for me maybe I will be able to research from there.

Hi, This should probably be moved to the Wintermantel board... :-) Anyway, I agree that there are errors on the Paul Wintermantle data, but that work was done long ago. I have done some work myself on the family, and found that the Wintermantels in the Kaiserstuhl area of Baden (Bischoffingen and Ihringen) came from Wuerttemberg orignally. I have located the Ihringen ancestors, but not the Bischoffingen ones, so am not sure if they are related or not. Both villages became Protestant in the 1500-1600s, tho the ancestral Wintermantels were most likely Catholic before that. Wintermantel families in the US in Wisconsin and the midwest mainly came from Baden. Eastern US lines most often appear to be from Wuerttemberg. That's about all that I can tell you.
Noah Jenne/Jenney of VT - there are Two (2) Noahs & Look-Up Request

{Cross posted from the Jenney board.}

The FIRST Noah Jenne is:
Noah Jenne, b,. 1750 VT, listed in Am. Gen. Biog. Index (AGBI) 90: 456 as abstracted from "State of VT: Rolls of the soldiers in the Rev. War, 1775-1783" by John E. Goodrich (Rutland VT, 1904), p. 277. (The AGBI is now a DB at Ancestry but I have a hard time calling it up.) The details of this man's service would be at the VT ROLLS p. 277; I do not have access to that here in CT. I can not say if his service is credited to Hartland VT. BUT that would appear to be the case. Patricia Law Hatcher's "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots" (4 vols Dallas Tx 1987)is an extracted DB at Ancestry. It says that "Noah Jenne" is buried in "Hartland VT 16". The 16 presumably refers to the the Jenneville Cemetery mentioned in "Hartland VT in the Am Rev" book available through HeritageQuest.

The SECOND Noah Jenne is:
buried in the "West Genoa Cemetery, Genao, Cayuuga Co. NY 69", again according to Hatcher's "Abtract of Graves" book. THIS is the Noah Jenne credited with Rev War service by the DAR, specificallymfor the March 1780 militia service detailed in "Hartland in the Rev War" per above.

Now, a male born in 1766 per several Jenne family accounts would NOT be allowed on a militia expedition in 1780. At 14 years old, he would be 2 years below the legal age limit for military service throughout the NE colonies. They wouldn't have taken him, even as a fifer or drummer. A Noah b. in 1750 would be an appropriate age of 30 as a private in that company.

So, it appears that the various accounts that credit Noah J., b. 1766 to Samuel may be wrong. And the DAR descent/credit is also likely wrong.

So, to which branch of the Jenne family did the 1750 Noah belong to? Did he leave any descendants?

Can someone post here or send me the Jenne Book pages on Noah and his putative father Samuel? Does the book list another Noah?
Hi ~ I believe I may be able to get an extra copy of The Jenney Book if you are still looking. I am Barbara Jenney, b. 1957 to Alan Milton Jenney of Dorchester, Mass. Is this likely to be the right thread?

Re: Martin Jenne & Ursula Jacob in Germany about 1700

Re: Jenne family group #19, generation 8.

Family of Charles Percival Jenne (married Crystal Brilliant Snow). Three children: Corrinne bertha, Charles Jacob, Phyllis Mae.

First child Corrinne Bertha Jenne, b. May 20, 1918, married David Franklyn Kenway, b. Dec. 1916. Marriage date is right, I think (I am their son). I have all the other data for their deaths and for their two children, my sister and me. You may have this already from Kathleen McKinney, my cousin, also descended from Charles Percival Jenne and Crystal B. Snow, via their son Charles Jacob Jenne.

I did note that you had little information on my father so I'm fixing that.

My family are very interested in your work here, and have pored over it extensively (courtesy of Kathleen McKinney). It turns out that the grandmother of a high school friend of mine in Juneau Alaska with whom I ran cross country in the mid-1960's, was 1st cousin to my grandfather, which neither of us knew.

Thanks for doing this Jenne Family history.

--David Kenway

Thank you for your message. I do still have the same Email
address. The details I have about the Jenneys (and variations) were obtained from a type written account titled The Descendants of John Jenney of Plymouth, Mass. by Susan Cotton Tufts which is dated 1942 (about my vintage). I came across the Jenney name when researching the Carpenter family and found Cyrus Carpenter married Hanna Jenney c1823. The above mentioned document took the Jenney family back several generations. Don't recognise any of your other family names!
