Hello Pauline - I have hit a brick wall in researching
the Jegle line - but this is what I know.
My Grandfather, Henry was born in Alsace in 1898. His
father was Michael , born in Paris - but I do not know
the year. They came to America in 1904. There was a
document (now lost-ugh) signed by Napoleon that
changed our family name from Jaeckel to Jegle. One of
my ancestors was a bodyguard to Napoleon - and he
could not have a bodyguard with a german surname.
Even though Alsace was under German occupation when
they immigrated - they always insisted they were
French.
It surprised me to find that there are no Jegles in
France !!! There are a number of listings in Germany.
Family lore says my family came from Italian Alps 500
years ago and the name was Jaegglio (sp) -- but I have
not been able to go back past my great-grandfather to
find how much truth is in this.
I wish I knew more -- if I find anything out I'll let
you know.
