I descended from Benjamin and Elizabeth Jeffreys. My line goes Benjamin- William Sr.- Samuel- Andrew Jackson Jeffreys (b 1864). Andrew J Jeffreys is my gg grandfather. If you have any information on Benjamin and Elizabeth, or on Andrew, I would greatly appreciate it. I seem to be unable to gather much information on either.

-Lorie

Susan- I have been searching for my Jeffreys ancestors of West Virginia. I am descended from Benjamin Jeffreys and Elizabeth Schmidt through their son William Sr., and his son Samuel (Euceby's little brother, b. 1836). Samuel married Sarah Hamrick, and their son Andrew Jackson Jeffreys is my gg grandfather. I have not been able to find much information on Benjamin and Elizabeth. I actually can find very little on Andrew J Jeffreys. He married Elizabeth "Bettie" Burrows and had 11 children that I kniw of. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Lorie

John Jackson Jeffreys lived in Morgan and Walker Co.,AL

I am currently researching John Jackson Jeffreys who was listed in the 1830 census of Morgan County Alabama and was in Walker County Alabama in 1840.

I have seen refrences on line that state as fact that this man served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. I have also seen refrences to a "third' wife by the name of either Deannah or Dicy A.

Does anyone have any documents that prove these statements? Does anyone know where I may get copies of these documents?

Hi- I am looking for more about E.B. Jeffreys (age 20 in 1880 Granville NC census) who resided with W.H. Jeffreys (22). They lived next to Charles E. Jeffreys (children Sarah, Charles, Nora, Henry,) and either are sons or nephews. Existing trees conflict with Charles E. Jeffreys with four to eight children and one or two wives (possibly two Charles E. Jeffreys in Granville county). E.B. Moved to Mecklenburg around 1896, was married to Lucy F.

Hello Bill,

Glad to hear from you - sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've just driven from Dallas (to escape the summer's 100+ temps) to my summer house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts where it's usually in the 70's and 80's F through September.
Yes, I made a brief stay in Trecastle and spent a full day in the Powys County Archives in Llandrindod Wells looking up more about the ancestors. I had a few nights before that over in Maidstone working through the Marquess Camden & (Sir) Jeffrey Jeffreys Estate papers, which is a very large collection and includes letters and documents on the Jeffreys of Llywel dating back to the 17th century. Ended my visit with a quick weekend in London where the rain finally stopped and sunshine / springtime in full swing.
I will return to London this Saturday for a weekend there before heading out to Carmarthenshire for a few nights. I'll be staying near Cilycwm above Llandovery at a lovely B&B called Bwlch Tre Banau. This estate was owned by my great grandfather's maternal family for generations - the Price family. About 12 years ago I visited the place while it was in private hands and terrible repair and was listed for sale. From their website it appears to have been meticulously restored.
I'm glad to hear that Ian and Vera have achieved their goal of letting rooms at Ynysclydach. They were doing such a diligent job of restoration when I was last there. I actually tried looking it up first as a place to stay but couldn't find anything online, so I made the wrong assumption that it wasn't available. I will plan to stop in and say hello next week when I'm in the area.
I have been in email contact with Richard Camp with regard to Llywel Church. I want to be able to have access inside the church next week and somehow have found Richard as a resource for the church. I assume that perhaps Tommy Watkins has passed away. I used to have tea with him and Mrs. Watkins every time I visited. They were so lovely.

Could not get an email to go thru to the addy provided.
All my best to you and if you would pass along greetings to Rosemary,
Warmest Regards,
Bradley

To All of You,
In looking back you all may find that the birth town for the JEFFREYs is Franklin, NC, Macon Co.; not Franklin Co., NC. At least this is what most folks on ancestry have in their data. I am the 5th g-granddaughter/o Grizel (Yancey) ALSTON (Mrs. James Alston), the sister of Nathaniel ALSTON, h/o Mary Grey JEFFREYS / JEFFRIES. Whether this is correct, I have no idea but worth checking into and studying. I too, am curious about the JEFFREYS. BTW, the researchers have them dying and buried Franklin NC, Macon Co.
Abigail Banks Dennison
Las Vegas, Nv. / formerly of Franklin NC, Macon Co.

It is said on some trees that she is the dau of Dennis J and Elizabeth (Trembly) Jeffers. Do you have any thing that would lead to this conclusion?
On a whim today I googled "John Jeffries Evesham," and was delighted to find your family tree summary on RootsWeb. I am the granddaughter of Elsie May Jeffries, your father's eldest sister. I have done some research on Ancestry.com, but have been unable to find much information about my great-grandfather, John Jeffries, other than what I have found in the records at www.badsey.net. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, on 18 Dec 1945. My parents were Joyce Halford and Ivor Gilmour. Jane Aguilard, Sarasota, Florida.

I., 1709; also he has Sarah, and perhaps other children and died 1683.

George Jeffrey, Boston, 1676, a merchant from Scotland, may have been, 1684, at Portsmouth.

Gregory Jeffrey, Wells, was freeman1653, constable 1658, had wife Mary, and son John, and infant. He died 1662; his widow married John Lux.

Robert Jeffrey, Charlestown, came in the Eliz. and Ann, 1635, aged 30, bringing wife Mary, 27, and children-Thomas, 7; Eliz., 6; and Mary, 3; two maid servants, Susan Brown, 21; and Hannah Day, 20; he removed to R. Somerset.

William Jeffrey, Wymouth, one of the earliest settlers in Mass. Bay, before Gov. Winth. or even Capt. Endicott; probably first at Cape Ann, and may have drived along shore to Manchester, early called Jefry's Creek. or as far as Salem; and Felt claims him for Ipswich, but, of course, this would be some years later; he was sworn freeman 1631; may have had Mary, born 1642, and tradition gives him son John. He may be the brother of Robert, who was in R. I., 1638, and certainly is seen in list of freemen at Newport, 1655, where he died 1675, aged 84. His will names wife Mary, eldest daughter Mary, son Thomas, other daughters Sarah, Pricilla and Susanna.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633. Deputy from Newport, October 1664 [RICR 2:61]. Committee to set rates for Newport, 13 May 1667 [RICR 2:197]. Rhode Island jury, foreman, 29 August 1653 [EQC 1:314].

ESTATE: "W[illia]m Jeffryes, gent.," was a patentee of Agamenticus [York] on 2 December 1631 (and on 2 March 1631/2) [York Hist 1:86-88]. On November 1641 he received his division of lands at York, in partnership with Samuel Maverick, Elias Maverick and Hugh [sic] Bursley [York Hist 1:135].
"Mr. William Jefferey" held land in Newport as early as 16 January 1648[/9], when he was named as an abutter to lands being sold by James Rogers to Richard Knight, and on 6 June 1650 "William Jefferey" promised to "make the fence that hath been in controversy betwixt Richard Knight and myself" [RILE 1:5]. On 22 March 1653/4 "William Jefferays" sold to Lawrence Turner and Tobias Saunders a parcel of land measuring sixty-seven rods by fifty-six rods, "being the eastern part of the lands of William Jefferays of Newport" [RILE 1:28].

On 31 May 1660 in "answer to the petition of Willjam Jefferay, making claim to Jefferay's Neck, near Ipswich, it is ordered, that the petitioner shall have liberty to make good his plea before the whole Court, at such time as the Court shall see meet" [MBCR 4:1:423]. On 16 October 1660 in "answer to the petition of Mr. W[illiam] Jefferys, the Court judgeth it meet to grant him five hundred acres of land, to be laid out in such place as he shall find it, on the south side of our patent, & that to be a final issue of all claims by virtue of any grant heretofore made by any Indian whatsoever" [MBCR 4:1:440]. On 23 May 1666 William Hudson petitioned that the five hundred acres which he had purchased from Mr. William Jefferys "granted him the 16 October 1660 on the south line of our patent" be laid out [MBCR 4:2:302].

In his will, dated 8 December 1674 and proved 9 January 1675, "William Jefferay of Newport ... gent." bequeathed to "my eldest daughter Mary Greene the wife of John Greene of Newport ... lands ... being in Blackman Street near the City of London which lands ... were given me by ... my mother Audry Jefferay late of Chittingly in ... Sussex," with a part of the rents reserved for "my wife Mary Jefferay"; to "my son Thomas Jefferay all the remainder of my estate in old England"; to "my daughter Sarah the wife of James Barker of Newport" £5; to "my two daughters Priscilla and Susannah Jefferay all my land and housing" in Newport, being twenty-five acres; daughter Mary Greene to be executrix; "my wife's two brethren John and Danill Gould overseers" [RILE 1:66-67; Austin 112].

BIRTH: About 1590 (based on age at death), son of William and Audrey (Harvey) Jefferay of Chiddingly, Sussex [EIHC 17:27-33; Waters 253].

DEATH: Newport "2 January 1675 in the 85th year of his age" [Austin 112].

MARRIAGE: By 1642 Mary Gould, daughter of Jeremy Gould of Weymouth and Newport (Daniel and John Gould, sons of Jeremiah Gould, were appointed overseers of the will of their brother-in-law William Jefferys [Austin 306, citing an unknown source]. She survived him.

CHILDREN:
i MARY, b. Weymouth 20 March 1642; m. by about 1665 John Greene [Austin 87].

ii THOMAS, b. say 1646; named in father's will, 8 December 1674; perhaps returned to England, having inherited his father's estate there.

iii SARAH, b. say 1650; m. by 1675 James Barker [Austin 14].

iv PRISCILLA, b. say 1652; m. by about 1682 as his first wife Thomas Coddington [Austin 278].

v SUSANNAH, b. about 1656; m. by about 1688 Edward Thurston [Austin 201].

ASSOCIATIONS: The will of Audrey Jefferay, mother of the immigrant, included a bequest to "son William Jeffery" of "two houses being part of three tenements anciently known and commonly called by the name of Flower de Luce ... in the parish of St. George the Martyr, Southwark [Surrey]"; the abstract of this will is accompanied by extensive information on the ancestry and English connections of William Jeffreys [EIHC 17:27-33].
Audrey (Jefferys) Evance whose will was proved London 25 October 1651 [PCC Grey 184] was sister of William Jeffreys and wife of Hugh Evance; their son John Evance was an early resident of New Haven [Waters 253].

Savage suggested that Robert Jeffrey of Newport may have been brother of William, but the will of William's mother showed that he had only one brother, Thomas.

William Jeffreys is on several occasions in the 1620s and 1630s associated with JOHN BURSLEY of Weymouth. This may merely indicate that they were the two leading citizens of Wessagusset [Weymouth] during those years, rather than a kinship connection.

COMMENTS: "Mr. Jeffrey and Mr. Burslem" [William Jeffreys and JOHN BURSLEY] together contributed £2 to the fund for returning THOMAS MORTON to England in 1628 [Bradford LB 43].

In their first letter to John Endicott, on 21 April 1629, the Governor and Deputies of the Massachusetts Bay Company noted that "W[illia]m Jeffryes, gent.," was one of those authorized by Gorges to give possession of a grant of land to JOHN OLDHAM [MBCR 1:398]. In the patent to THOMAS LEWIS and Richard Bonython, and in the patent to JOHN OLDHAM and RICHARD VINES, both issued on 12 February 1629/30, William Jeffreys was appointed, along with WILLIAM BLACKSTONE and EDWARD HILTON, to put these men in possession of their lands [YLR 1:2:7-9, 2:110-11].

On 9 December 1630 John Humphrey wrote from London to Isaac Johnson, not knowing of Johnson's untimely death in September. In describing the machinations and political posturing going on at Court regarding the settlement in Massachusetts Bay, Humphrey mentioned the contrary position Sir Ferdinando Gorges had taken and the ammunition for that position being sent in letters by Jeffreys, saying "Jefferie is a bad man, he basely flings out in his letters to him, which Sir Ferd[inando] showed me, handle him wisely and by no means exasperate such spirits" [WP 2:329].

On 4 August 1634 a "letter was delivered to Mr. Winthrop by Mr. Jeffery, an old planter, written to him from Morton, wherein he related, how he had obtained his long suit, and that a commission was granted for a general governor to be sent over, with many railing speeches and threats against this plantation, and Mr. Winthrop in particular. Mr. Winthrop acquainted the governor and council with it, and some of the ministers" [WJ 1:164].

About February 1640/1 "Jeremy Gould of Rode Island yeoman & Will[ia]m Jeffreys of Weymouth ... gent" were bound in £30, on the condition that on or before the following 24 August Gould would convey to Henry Waltham three acres of meadow in Weymouth [Lechford 372-73]. (William Jeffreys may already have been married to Jeremy Gould's daughter Mary by the date of this transaction.)

Savage includes a son John "by tradition," but no son by this name appears in William's will, or in any other record.
Because the name Jeffrey's Creek was early attached to the area that became the town of Manchester, claims have been made that William Jeffreys resided there at some time, but there is no evidence for this.

Hello to All,
My name is Michael JEFFREY and I have been reading all the posts ( 32 as of this date ) and find them very interesting. I have been researching the JEFFREY name and have traced it back to Kentucky. I had been told that the name/family had its roots in Virginia. Does anyone know much about the JEFFREY/JEFFREYS family during this time period? I would be very pleased to hear anything from anyone. Thanks Michael Jeffrey

Hi, I am Prosser Jeffreys, Jr. half sister. I see that you had some communication with Kim Boyko. I have been looking for my brother for some time but can't find any leads. Do You have any information? I have found information about his being a prisoner of war and even found where he re-enclisted after the war, but only for a very short time. After that it seems he disappeared. Do you have anything since that time? Perhaps a wife or children?
thanks for any help you can give me.

The label on the back states:

Estd. 1838
RICHARD JEFFREYS
Carver, Gilder and Fraame Maker
88 BOLD STREET
LIVERPOOL

The picture was given to me by an elderly neighbour about twenty-five years ago but I don't know how old it is.
hope this helps.

brian

I do hope you receive this plea for help. Your Dennis Jeffers (1755=1844)(m. Eliz Trembly) is also an ancestor of mine.

I have searched for proof of his parents but with no luck. Have you found them? I think is descended from Richard Jefferis but can't prove it.

Can anyone help me with this?

The family you are looking for who were Lords of the Manor of Ewyas Lacy is the Jeffreys Family of Llywel in Breconshire. There were 2 different families of Jeffreys living in Breconshire. See Theophilus Jones' History of Brecknockshire for details on the two separate families.
Some of the Llywel branch lived in Brecon, including (Sir) Jeffrey Jeffreys of the Priory and his descendants.
Eliza Jefferies, Jasper Co, Iowa

I am looking for Mrs. Eliza Jeffreys, of Jasper Co, Iowa. There seems to be at least two in Jasper Co, IA. Mine was born June 12, 1860 as Eliza Roush. Eliza had two husbands before Mr. Jeffreys. Eliza is named as Eliza Jeffreys in her sister, Susannah Roush/Sanderson's, obituary in 1916. in her 1920 census in the home of her brother in law, James Sanderson in Jasper Co, IA in James Sanderson's obit in 1921 & in the 1930, Palo Alto, Jasper Co, IA census in the home of her neice, Alta Selbher & her husband John W. Selbher. I have a photo of Eliza taken in 1938 at her brother's 100th birthday. Then the trail runs cold. If Jeffreys Family can help, let me know.

John JEFFREYS

I am descended from John Jeffreys born in 1606. He married Margaaret Ireland daughter of Thomas Ireland and margaret Aston. They had a son Thomas date born unknown. My notes indicate that the family were landowners from the 10th century. Thomas had a son John born in 1630 in Wiltshire. His son Robert was born in Pewsey, Wiltshire, England in 1668. Robert immigrated to the United States in 1681 possibly with William Penn. I am looking for any information on this family in England. Thank you

Jeffreys Family of Brecon Wales

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries members of the Jeffreys family of Brecon in Wales and Sheen, Middlesex were Lords of the Manor of Ewyas Lacy in Herefordshire. A search by ‘Jeffreys’ on the web site at www.ewyaslacy.org.uk gives 53 documents with a mention of Jeffreys or Jeffries. I would like to know more about this family and in particular where any family records may be located.
