Just a note... I quickly realized there's not a lot of information if you look for Jeane, but once you search for the surnames Jean/Gean/Jeans/Jeanes, you can find a lot. Let me know who you are looking for and I'll see what I can do to help.

I was intrigued to see several responses from folks who spelled their names "Jeane", because I have had trouble finding any listings. I am descended from a Thomas Jeane, married to Ida Jeane, in Louisiana. My father, Henry Edwin "Ed" was one of about 12-14 surviving children. Their homeplace is located now where Ft. Polk now stands. If anyone has any info. I would appreciate it.

My grandfather was a Jeane, but his sister
was a Jeans. It doesn't really make sense.

I have some Thomas Jeanes and some Ida Jeanes,
but none that are married to each other.

E-mail me and I'll see if I've got anyone
you recognize.

Surnames: Jeanes,Janes
I have been researching my great greatgrandfather, James Borne(Barnes)Jeanes. He came from a large family, He lived in Wilkinson County, GA. He and three brothers, Vincent, William and Elisha joined the CSA in May of 1862. James died in Oct. of 62 from pnuemonia following a bout of measles while in Atlanta. He is buried in Oakland Cemetry in Atlanta. His parents were John Green Jeanes and Margaret(Phamey)Collins. His son, James Lewis, was a Jeanes until sometime between 1910 and 1920. In the 1920 census he became James L Janes and remained a Janes for the remainder of his life. This is a mystery to all of his relatives. While searching I found a site telling about the Jeanes. They were from France and the name was originally De Jeane. Don't know if this pertains to ours or not. James L. was either warden or asst. warden of the Milledgeville State Prison when it was broken into and Leo Frank was taken back to Merrietta, GA. and hung. I have wondered if that may have had something to do with the name change. Have no clue.
