According to Reany, Jeal is Anglo-Saxon and derived from the characteristic of angry/jealous. I answered to that but grew up eventually!

My grandfather, William Warington Jeal, came from Epsom, Surrey, and lived and died in Walton-on-Thames. He was English but married Alice Scheurer, whose ancestry was German.

Did you ever get a response to this? William Joseph Jealis actually a half brother, son of William senior's first marriage to Susan Thornton. Eleanor (occasionally recorded as Helena) Rosina is the youngest of 4 daughters from William's second marriage to Elizabeth Matilda Venables. The other daughters are Lilian Ethel (b1884), Ada Eleanor (b 1885), and Maud Alice (b 1886). This branch of Jeals descend from the Orpington Jeals via William Blackman Jeal.
