I received an email awhile back from a Janusz Jozef Janicki. Unfortunately, it got buried before I replied and I just found it again and the email address used is no longer valid. He was asking me about Marta Janicka (maiden name Pianko) and I think we are connected through her sister Alexandra Pianka. Is this the same Janicki (I hope, because you are from the same area in Poland)? Do you know how I can contact Janusz or do you have information we could compare on the Pianko line? Thanks.

-Terri Jaskolka

Frank J. Janicki, age 96, of Erie, Pa.,son of the late Wlaslaw "Walter" and Maryanna Janicki.
Frank J. Janicki, age 96, of Erie, Pa.,
residing at Niagara Village passed away into Gods arms on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at UPMC Hamot, after a brief illness. He was born in Erie on May 11, 1916, the son of the late Wlaslaw "Walter" and Maryanna Janicki. Mr. Janicki was a machinist at General Electric for 43 years. He retired in 1980 and spent winters in Bonita Springs, Florida where he later met and at the age of 80, married a vibrant and talented musician, Viola Witt. He enjoyed life to fullest with her performances throughout South Florida. Throughout his life he enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing poker at local clubs and gin rummy with family. He enjoyed the casino as often as possible. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceeded in death by three brothers Casey, John, and Joseph Janicki, and two sisters Helen Kleiner, and Annabelle Sznajder. Also, by his daughter Dolores James. Mr. Janicki is survived by his brother Anthony Janicki of Florida, son Frank W. Zielinski and his wife Sue of Erie, his daughter Fran Gambino of Fredonia, New York, and several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Janicki was devoted to his family, proud of his Polish heritage and a member of several local clubs. He was independent and active, had a quick wit and lively spirit, and he had an uncanny ability to win at cards almost every time he played up to the time of his passing. At Mr. Janicki's request there will be no viewing. However, family and friends may attend a funeral mass at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church, 516 East 13th Street in Erie on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements were under the care of Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 602 West Tenth Street, Erie, PA 16502.
Erie Times-News on February 14, 2013 .

Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church, "
I wish you luck in your search and hopefully, you have found information by now. I think most adoption records are now more freely accessible to adoptees.
My mom passed in Oct. 2002 and she and my father were good friends of Bernadine and Gerry at Hope Church in Detroit on Kenney Street. I am sure she would have had some information but then again maybe not - not sure how private Bernadine and Gerry were regarding the adoptions.

Sincerely,
My name is Bonny(Janicki)Pask. kphaugh is my daughter. Albert and Agnes are my great-great Grandparents. Their son, Roman, my great-Grandfather. His son, Andrew, my Grandpa and his son, Davis, my Father. I have, in the last year, been in contact with Roman's wife's (Katherine Mackowiak), side of the family. We don't have many pictures of this side of the family and most of the ones we do we don't know who they are. My sister, Cheryl and I, my daughter and son and my two grandchildren are all that's left of Roman's line. A Big coincidence in that we were also at the gravesite this last summer! Looking forward to hearing from you soon. -B-

Antonia Janicki-Konieczny was my great-grandmother. She had 6 children and farmed in the town of Chase, where Adelbert farmed and also son Roman. I went to look for the Janicki headstone at the Pulaski Polish cemetery this summer. There were no dates and it was weathered. JANICKI was barely legible. I have a picture with Agnes and Albert. I can e-mail it to you. How are you related?

I'm posting regarding the second husband of my great grandmother, Carl (or Karl?) Janicki.

He was married to my great grandmother, Maria ("Mary") Janicki. (Note that she was also "Maria Horhota" before marrying him.) They lived in St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. In the 1950s or 60s, Carl/Karl went back to the Ukraine to reunite with his daughters and bring them to Canada. Nobody knows what exactly happened, but Baba got a death certificate in the mail. We can only assume he wasn't allowed to return as the Ukraine was under communist rule at the time.

Any information on Carl/Karl would be more than appreciated. I have wondered ever since hearing the story what exactly happened.

Frances had an older brother named Jan Kocieda from Olszewko, who was my great grandfather. What I know Frances and Wladyslaw Janicki had 6 sons: Wladyslaw, Stanley, Theadore (Tadeus), Harry, Peter and Edward. If anyone knows of any information about descendants of Frances Janicki (1879 - 1969), please let me know. Thank you.

My info on the name Strzyneek may not be the final word. I am sure this is a mis-spelling by the person who recorded the info on my grandfather's record. They may have spelled it the way it sounded to them. You may find a different spelling or name on another record.

Go to the 5th floor of the HW library and look for the Municipal Reference Collection. That is where you will find cenus records and other documents.

The library does not have vital stats. You must contact the Cook County Clerk's Office to get birth, marriage and death records. Find their web site to learn more.

I think I will go to the Harold Washington Library to look up the vital stats. I knew about the Newberry Library having genealogical info, but hadn't thought about the harold Washington Library--I guess I didn't realize they would have genealogy info.
I do want to get documents that show the vital stats. because you're absolutely right about the verbal info --a good place to start but it's not always reliable. It's like that game kids play called the Telephone Line (or something like that) where the first person whispers something to the 2nd person and he/she passes the message to the next person and so on until it gets to the 30th person and the message ends up totally different from the original. Same thing happens with oral histories. Families should write things down in a journal and keep it up to date. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out like that.
Anyway, thank you so much for your help. I do plan to follow up on the info you have given me. I'm sure my sister will be glad to do some of the "detective" work, also. I was glad to see what Clara's maiden name really was. I have no idea where "Lempke" came from. That may be the result of what I mentioned above about the kid game. By the time it got to my Grandmother, the message got all messed up.
Thank you again for your help. It is so greatly appreciated. I knew so little of my Grandfather's family--I at least have more info to work with. Best regards, Marge.

Finding Documents

I'm glad I was able to help you. Verbal information from family members is a good place to start but you should try to find documents to support that info. Try to find birth and death certificates from Cook County Vital Statistics. Perhaps one of those records will have the name Lempke or mention a birth on a ship. If you live in Chicago, the Harold Washington Library has microfilms of census records, city directories, and newspapers. The 1910 Janicki census record is on roll # J520. The LDS Family History Centers have birth and death indexes. Good luck on your search.

I appreciate all the emails you have sent. I was getting a bit frustrated at running into dead-ends. And, like I said in a reply to another e-mail, I agree that written documentation is far better than the verbal. I do believe my Grandmother was misinformed on some things--which is why I wanted to get documentation.
I hope you don't mind me saying thank you again. It is such a relief to finally get some information I have been looking for. It has made me quite a happy camper. Marge.

My sister has a document that states Felix Janicki arrived in the U.S. on 28 June 1886 from Hamburg. Based on that, I looked at microfilm #0473086 for Hamburg departures, 1886 Jan-Jun at the LDS church. The German ship "Austrailien" left from Hamburg to New York on 23 June 1886. Clara, Micheal and Wladyslav were listed as passengers. I believe Felix worked as a crew member to save or earn money. The ages and place of origin for Clara and Wladyslav match the information on the 1910 census record.

The information I gave you is from documents that I have found. I prefer to trust written information rather than verbal, but it is always possible that the person who provided the info at the time was mistaken. The name Strzyneek was on my grandfather's death certificate. The information about the town and such is from a passenger list I found at the Latter-Day Saints Church. I am using my computer at work to send you this message and have my documents at home. Tomorrow I will tell you how to find the passenger list so you can read it yourself.

Thank you for the information, glad to finally know the name of the town in Poland. It was part of family "oral history" that I heard about the oldest being born onboard ship. I don't know who told her that. My Grandfather rarely spoke about his family at all (I never heard him talk about them); I can only assume that one (or more) of Grandpa's siblings told Grandma about the family. My Grandmother was very accurate about the family history and I don't understand the differene in the maiden name of Clara. My sister has also been involved in doing the family genealogy and info we have got from her has been right on target. It was very rare for Grandma to not recall something and she usually told us if she wasn't 100% sure of something. I would like to be able to follow up on the Lempke/Strzyneek name. I am puzzled by that. But then, this is one of the reasons I want to find out more about the family history. Grandma may have been mis-informed by one of Grandpa's siblings. Maybe Lempke is the maiden name of someone else and they didn't make it clear who they were referring to. Grandma was very good at who was who in the family.
But thanks for the info. If there is anything else you know or can tell me where I can find this info, I would appreciate it very much. I still have some blanks to fill in. Just to find out what you told me was so encouraging. Thank you. Regards, Marge.

My information is a little different from yours, but I don't think there could be more than one Felix and Clara Janicki in Chicago in 1890. They came from Jaslo in southeastern Poland. They sailed to America in 1886 with their sons Micheal and Wladyslav. Clara's family name was Strzyneek. Why do you believe their first child was born on the ship and Clara's family name was Lempke ?

Hi Marge,

Please try it again. Most people mistake the "0" (numeric) for "O" (alpha) in the email address.

The email address is "SHADOW0@BELLSOUTH.NET. That Shadow0 (which is the numeric zero - it is the number not the alphabetical "O" at the end of the name). You should be able to get it through to me with this. I will try to pick up your email address and send you a "test email". That should make it easier for you.

Best regards and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Jean
Hi Marge,

The Janicki surname is connected to my Great Grandfather, Piotr Janicki. I remember my mother speaking of the "Lempke" side of the family, but as yet I have not investigated it. There were other brothers as well, but I have not been able to connect them as yet. I believe my great grandfather may have been one of the older brothers who came to the US in 1872. I have not been able to establish the date, except for a newpaper clipping regarding their anniversary and the number of years they had lived in the US. The clipping does show a name in Poland, yet, I can find no reference to it, and most likely it is misspelled. Their are a few grandchildren left (mostly in their late 80's and one will be 96 this year). I go home to Chicago to celebrate his birthday every year, and also to Ohio to celebrate another great grandchild's birthday.

Please contact me at my email address directly. Shadow0@Bellsoutn.net. I will be happy to share what I have. I do know that there were at least two brothers of my great grandfather in the US when my mother was growing up. She spoke of other Janicki family in New York and Pennsylvania areas as well as a few other states. She left me a list of family names before she died and it has helped fill in some gaps.

Best regards,
Jean
Janicki family in Chicago

I'm trying to find information about my great-grandfather who came to America in the 1880's, I believe. His first name was Felix and his wife's first name was Clara. Her last name was Lemke (or Lempke). Their first born arrived en route to America, while on board the ship. I would like to know the name of the ship they came on and where they landed--port of entry. I have not seen their name listed at Ellis Island and wonder if they landed in Canada possibly or some other port in America. I don't even know where in Poland they lived, which is frustrating. I really would love to know more about them before they came to the States. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Anton was in the Mundare/Chipman/Lamont area. He married Anna Warshawski. Anton worked in the Fort Saskatchawan area for a little while. Anton was born 1892 in Poland and came to Canada about 1899. Do you know any of Frank's family. Mom said Anton also had a sister who had mental problems.
Laura

Descendants of Golba, Sliwinski, Jaworska, and Janicki

Looking for any information or descendants of Chester Janicki (b: Nov 2, 1924)and Helen Sliwinski Janicki of Detroit. Helen is daughter of Jozef Sliwinski (b: Mar 1889) and Julia Golba (b:Feb 16 1889), both born in Poland (exact location is a mystery) and settled in Hamtramck and Detroit, MI. These were my great-grandparents. Jozef Sliwinski is the son of Bronislaw Sliwinski and Anna Jaworska. Any information on possible connections or cities of origin would be greatly appreciated.

Re: descendants of Frances Janicki from Michigan USA

I found this by chance in The Thompsonville Press, February 28, 1957 edition. The age seems to fit your Peter Janicki:

"Ill and without relatives, Peter Janicki, 70, virtually homeless save for the farmers of the area who gave him food and a place to sleep in exchange for chores he could perform, committed suicide by hanging last night on the farm of Joseph Kalida at 1427 Enfield St. Janicki had been doing odd jobs on Mr. Kalida’s place for the last four or five days in exchange for meals and a bed. Yesterday afternoon he went to work in a tobacco shed while Mr. Kalida was absent on business. He did not appear again and when Mr. Kalida came home he went to look for the elderly man. Checking the shed he discovered the body. Police were notified and Officer Patsy D’Amato conducted the investigation. The body was removed to the Leete Funeral Home after Dr. Howard Gourlie had made the examination. Patrolman D’Amato reported that Janicki had been ill for several weeks, had been subsisting on his odd jobs and a $25 a month old age pension for several years and apparently was despondent. Police are still seeking relatives."

Marisa,
I have a Frank Janicki(or Jacknicki) from Canada that had a brother named Anton and possibly one named Joseph, there may even be more. Anton was actually born in Churtkov, Galicia, Poland or around that area. Anton's wife was Karolina Warshawski. Karolina was the daughter of Anna Molchan and John Warshawski. Anton and Karolina also had a son named Frank that lives in Chipman, Alberta, Canada. I know there are some Jacknicki's living in the United States but I have not made any connection to any of these. You can e-mail me direct at rlmljm@gtcinternet.com.
Thanks,
Laura
