Classification: Query
Surnames: Jalland/ Jallings/ Jellings/ Jollings
I think all of these are variations on the same name; they turn up in Nottinghamshire and to a lesser extent in Yorkshire from mid 1500's but lots more from c. 1800--on; my dad, Jack Jallings, traced back through John Henry Jallings, b. 1847 in London; his father James b. in Southwell Notts as were several brothers /cousins-- I think the earliest one there was William-- but when I was there the man in the gen. office told me that the spellings were variants and that you would see the same person spelled at least two ways across their lifetime depending on who was doing the talking/writing. It is a relatively rare name-- the only two Jallings families I have ever been able to find in the US are John Henry in Illinois and his cousin James Stevenson Jallings in WI and MN-- everyone else who turns up on a search is descended from one of these. I haven't bothered to track the Jellings/Jollings although there are some in the middlewest since I knew who I was looking for!
