Jakes from Collenton Co. S.C.

Requesting information from the descendants of Landy and Adeline Jakes from Collenton CO. S.C. Their son's were Daniel, William(my great grandfather), John, Morgan, Joseph and Washington. Their daughters were Elvira Rickenbacker and Louvenia. John relocated to Georgia during the early 1900's. Daniel resided in Jasper S.C. and William and his family resided in Branchville, S.C. until 1930. I'm trying to complete my family tree. Any information would be helpful.

I don't have alot of information on them, except I know that their daughter, Eldora I. Holland, born in 1867 in Tennessee, married Francis M. Yates (my line) in Bedford County, TN on 4 Dec 1888. Francis Yates died in 1897 and is buried in the Holt Cemetery in Bedford County, TN.

I am directly descended from George Jakes. He was married to Olga McCord. His parents were Alexander Jakes and Arminda Harrell. They were born in Murfreesboro and Coffee, TN. I have a lot more information on my ancestry page if you would like to know more!

Thanks, thanks for this info, I'll definitely check it out. I thought perhaps the Jaques/Jacques/Jakes were French Canadian?, but I have no proof. I also found a Jakes in New England (Salisbury/Amesbury MA) but not the right line. Thanks so very much. I'll look into RI and NY. Are you related to this family? Sarah Jakes (Jaques, Jacques) was my 2nd G-Grandmother. She was married to David Byrum before she married Nicholas Holsberry. I am not sure of the spelling of her last name. In my family Bible it is spelled Jakes, on my great grandfather's death certificate is spelled Jaques. She was born 7 Oct 1819 and died 13 Dec 1883. She is buried in Alton Cemetery near Alton, Franklin Co., Ohio

I show that Sarah was born 7 Oct 1819 and died. 23 Dec 1883. She is buried in Alton Cem., Alton, Franklin co., OH. Their 5 children are Gabriel; Mary Elizabeth; Richard Pierce; James; Emily; Martha Ann.

I only have an address for Ray Keck. He is a lovely man and I am sure he would assist you.

I don't have proof, but Sarah Jaques father may have been Varnum Jaques born 2 Apr 1796 Michnook Pond, Kent Co, RI died 2 Dec 1852 Alexandria, Licking Co, OH. Her mother may have been Susannah Jane Burleson born 1802 Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY died 25 Jul 1829 Augusta, Oneida, NY
On William Byrum's death certificate(her son from her first marriage) it is listed that Sarah was born in NY. Also, there are several Holsberry families in Licking Co, OH. Licking Co is just east of Franklin Co where Sarah lived with John Holtsberry and where she is buried.

Take this info with a grain of salt because it is conjecture.

Don't know if this will help or not but I have attached the 1910 entry for John Burns family. This of course is after Katy's death but may give you a bit more insight to where she was from. It lists KY as the children's mothers place of birth. I will check thru more records and see if I can find anything.

I do not know for certain but felt that Ellen Jakes may be the dau of William and Margaret Jakes. In their 1860 entry they lived in Tippecanoe IN and had a daughter who at that time was age 3 and listed as Martha E. Jakes. I wonder if the actual document might show further info or if there was a local paper that carried the marr. announcement.

I have all the statistics on John Nicholas and some on their children. You should try looking in Paulding, Paulding Co. OH. Ray Keck and others have compiled lots of books on birts, deaths, marriages, veterans, etc. They are very helpful. Let me know if you want more on the children. You may be able to look at trees thru them.

Marie, thank you! I have come across Louisa before now, and think she IS George's mom, but unable to actually tie her in....I have her birth and death dates, and where she is buried. She did live in the area I have been looking in and hopefully can get the tie in soon. This does give me another name to work with, AND one of George and Kate's children was also an Emma (maybe named for her aunt??) who married Louis Williams. They were my husbands g-grandparents. George and Kate's other children that I have come across are George, Gilbert, Preston, Lula and Frank. Again, thanks!

Since many of the other spellings of the name (see Subject)
were recorded in the US as "Jakes", I thought I'd give this board a try. I'm looking for any info on my g-g-granddad or his family: Hermann H. Jaaks or Jaacks, b. ca 1855/56 GE (prob. Prussia). m. Magdalena Loman(n) (b. ca 1854/55) in Jefferson Twp. (now part of Chicago), Cook Co. IL, 21 Jan 1877, by Rev. Friedrich Brunn of the Jefferson German- Evangelical Lutheran Church (Now St. John's Lutheran-MS). They had at least 5 daughters: Martha Hendrickson, Bertha Herman, Rosie Wiborg, Ida Nordin and Annie. Hermann may have remarried to an Annie (lnu) and had another daughter named Hattie. All the children were b. in Chicago.

Neu Eting, which I believe is in Austria, is the furthest back we are able to go with our Jakes information. This would be in the early 1800's, maybe 1815 or so, when the name changed from Jacques to Jakes. Our branch settled in Bohemia before coming to the US in 1900.

There are not too many Jakes of Czech origin. Our family had its name changed from Jacques to Jakes somewhere around 1815-20 in Austria after one of Napoleon's wars. Our branch settled in what is now the Czech Republic, but what was then Bohemia. Any of this sound familiar?

John Jakes (age 23, born about 1826) and Jane Ring (age 25, born about
1824) were married on 30 July 1849 in St. Clair County, Michigan. Witnesses
were Micajah Drown and Calvin DeForest. All were of the township of
Lexington, which was apparently in St. Clair county at that time and is
currently in Sanilac County.

I think it is the same person. I have Marth E. Jakes in my file married Jan. 25, 1877 in Ross Co., OH, but I had her husband as William H. Cowan and not William Downs. This is the same as your marriage date. Must do some sortin out. Martha jakes birthdate is May 10, 1857 and she died April 22, 1940.

I don't know if this will help any but if you know if George had any sisters this could help narrow them down. I have attached a snip of the census image for 1900 Saline MO Cambridge TWP pg 97 on it is a Louisa Jakes listed as a Mother in law which would make her the mother of the wife, Emma.

Thomas Dewitt Cooke was born July 13 1888 in Fruit Valley community of Bedford County and was the son of William Green and Jane Bell King Cook. He married Pearl Gray Jakes, daughter of James and Thelitha Ann Frizzell Jakes in Shelbyville TN on March 10, 1912. Pearl was born March 21, 1891 in Bellbuckle TN. When the Dupont Plant came to Old Hickory TN Tom found work with them and moved his family to Old Hickory. Tom and Pearl had seven childrenMary Agnus Magnus Cooke married Hugh Taylor Snoddy and had two sons --Hugh Snoddy and Gary Snoddy. Viola White Cooke married Johnnie Howard Agee and had two sonsHoward Wayne Agee and Donnie Agee. Tom D. Cook Jr. died at age nine during an outbreak of Scarlet/Rheumatic Fever in Old Hickory TN.
Olive June Cooke married John Arnett Brannon and had two sons--Michael Brannon & Billy Brannon and one daughter-- Margorie Brannon. Morris Bradford Cooke never married and he died in Shelbyville TN. Billy Joe Cooke married Fannie Beatrice Luna and had three sons--Daniel Morris Cooke, Samuel David Cooke & Michael Anthony Cooke and two daughtersRosanna Marie Cooke and Rebecca Faith Cooke. Bobbie Jean Cooke never married resides in Dickson TN with her brother Bill and his family. Tom Cooke retired from Dupont in August of 1953 after 27 ½ yrs of service. The Cooke family moved to Dickson TN in early 1970. Tom remained there until his death in March of 1971 after a long battle with lung cancer and emphysema. Pearl remained in Dickson TN until her death in July of 1993 at 102 yrs of age. Tom and Pearl are buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville Tennessee. Tom Jr. and Morris are also buried in the family plot at Mt Olivet Cemetery.

I am trying to confirm that Annette Jakes, seen in the 1870 census with her family in Baltimore, Maryland is the same as Annette Mitchel in the 1880 census in Brooklyn, NY married to William T Mitchel, with a baby daughter Mary A.

I am also trying to confirm that Annette and her husband William had another child Albert Henry Mitchel in 1881, which would be my grandfather. His SS application says that his father was William Theopolid Mitchel and his mother was Annette Jacques. The 1890 census for NY burned.

Annette Jakes' family in Baltimore Maryland included her father Henry and mother Mary A (just like Annette's daughter), and a long list of siblings including Frederick, Anistatia, Mary A, Margaret, Emily, Henry and Rose. Henry, Sr. was a caterer.
