I traced a line of ancestry in Scotland back to Elizabeth Izat/Izatt who married Francis Black in 1813. They had a daughter named Elizabeth who married Alexander Mitchell, born 1817. Does anyone else connect with these people?

I have read several interesting stories about the origins of the Izat/Izatt surname. I suspect that there are two or three separate Scots/English origins or foreign introductions of this name into Scotland. I like the story that says the meaning of Izat is "son of Isolde," but perhaps that story is too fanciful. A Scots woman told me that the name Izat/Izatt was not even Scots. Arabic speakers have a similar name that means "worthy," but I see no connection to the Middle East. The story that the name was carried into Scotland by Jewish refugees from Old Russia might be true for some modern Izats/Izatts, but the name in Scotland is obviously much older than the Russian pogroms. 11mitchell@mchsi.com
