Hello to all,
I have not been in the forum for a long time. I have worked with many Russian immigrants lately and have also found that a
female will add an A to the last name and a male will drop the A on a last name so the name Iwanova would indicate a female and Iwanov would indicate a male. The fact of Cryllic translation also during immigration is true since back when many of our family members came through Ellis Island or where ever they landed, at that point they didn't have many people who were cultured in all the languages that were coming through the gates of the USA so basically those that were translaing did their best to figure out what the names were. I also have seen my mother in laws papers from Russia and Germany with different spellings of her last name before marriage. Ewanova, Gwanova are included with Iwanova. I am still looking and have gotten no where to find any official documents that can prove where she was born. I have researched and even asked for help from the Ukrainian community in Canada. Again with no luck can they find or have had any contact with the spelling of my married name. How odd since my father in law would travel to Canada to help and socialize with so many of those in the large community of Ukrainians in the Ontario area around Niagra. For those of you who know that your families have Ukrainian roots, these societies are useful. For some reason our last name doesnt seem to ring a bell with anyone. Also my husbands family has pictures of parties with so many of the families in Canada and New York etc. Don't give up! Again if anyone knows of Alexandra Iwanova Fryndej, Michaljo Fryndej who were imprisioned in Germany during the war please contact me. Alexandra had wealthy family she left behind in in Russia, when she married
Michaljo. A brother who is beleived to be named Nicholas. Michaljo had family still in the Ukraine when he passed away but his daughters never kept in touch and would not give my husband the address, as he was a teenager when his dad passed away.
Any leads would be greatful. According to my sister in law Helena her parents were in Neurenberg...I do not know if this is true or not and can not get any info from the German government. I do know at one time my mother in law did receive a payment from the German government. Again any help is appreciated.

I have a question for you, I am trying to research the last name "Iwanow" but keep running into dead ends. Have you come across this last name in your search? I know the name was changed somewhere when immigration happened but I CANNOT find it anywhere!! If you could help that would be great
