If anyone posting here has more details as to locations, it would be of great help. When you refer to Russia, are you referring to the country itself or the USSR in general. Again, the wisdom of some of the immigration officials would just lump all eastern european origins into Russia, instead of Belo-Rys, Ukraine, Lithuania, etc. What you should be be listening for when speaking to older relatives is the phrase "Little Ukraine" or Galacia. This was the western portion of Ukraine (now under Poland). I do know that my great-grandfather originally came to Galacia sometime in the 1800's from Slovakia. At that time, Galacia was under Austro-Hungarian control. And quite a few people from mid european countries (Sloakia, Hungary, etc) emigrated there bacause then the land was cheap and abundant.
One thing I have found in researching my family and speaking with relatives, that they are very reluctant to speak of the years during the war and how they came to be in Germany. I've had to listen VERY carefully and "backdoor" a lot of my questions to get to a fully picture.
