Kenton E. Iwaniec, 24, of Lancaster, formerly of Ligonier, died Friday, March 28, 2008, in Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del., as the result of an automobile accident. Kenton was born Dec. 18, 1983, in Greensburg, the son of Kenneth and Debra Garchar Iwaniec.
He was an active member of St. Boniface Parish, Chestnut Ridge, where he was an altar server for more than 10 years. A 2002 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School, Kenton participated in football, ice hockey and JROTC, of which he was a group commander his senior year,
and was the recipient of numerous awards.
He accepted an appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy, where he studied for two years, and then received his degree from St. Vincent College, where he graduated with the class of 2007.
Kenton enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police on June 11, 2007, and graduated with the 125th class on Dec. 21, 2007. Trooper Iwaniec was assigned to the Patrol Unit at the Avondale Barracks,
where he was an incredibly eager, enthusiastic and dedicated trooper.
According to his superiors,
"Trooper Iwaniec courageously served the citizens of the Commonwealth of PA with honor and professionalism, and was extremely proud to be a Pennsylvania State Trooper." Kenton enjoyed the outdoors.
He loved to fish, was an avid hunter,
and loved spending time at the family cabin with his father, who was his best friend.
In addition to his parents,
Trooper Iwaniec is survived by his three sisters, Acacia Houck and her husband, Michael, of Scottdale,
Sashonna Zacour and her husband, Theron, of Ely, England,
and Ashley Iwaniec, of Ligonier;
and his grandmothers, Anna Mae Brier Iwaniec and Rosalie McConnell Garchar, both of Mt. Pleasant.
Kenton is also survived by his fiancee, Julie Kromer, of Greensburg;
his aunts and uncles, Edward Iwaniec,
Michael Garchar,
Diana McClain
and Linda Brown;
and by his cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Edward J. Iwaniec,
William C. Garchar
and Valerian Iwaniec.
Trooper Iwaniec's family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the Pennsylvania and Delaware State Police families for their love and support.
Kenton was a loving son,
a gentle brother,
a faithful fiance, and a loyal friend.
He will be deeply missed by all,
and yet his great sense of humor, his warm smile, and his giving ways will live on in our hearts forever.
Family and friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant. A blessing service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, followed by a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe, with Father Robert Byrnes as principal celebrant. Interment will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Cook Township
