Deceased Name: Ventura -- Len Don Evans

Len Don Evans, 60, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 14, 2003, after a brave, 18-month battle with leukemia.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1943, in Santa Monica, Calif., and attended local schools. He graduated from the University of California, Northridge with a bachelor of arts degree in history. Len later spent many years in Northridge, Santa Barbara and San Francisco. He had been living on Ventura's west side for 13 years at the time of his death.

Len's fondness for the past led him to genealogy and most notably compiling an extensive history of the Ivie family. However, Len's greatest love was that of Mexico. He traveled there extensively and never tired of doing historical research on that country. The Mexican Revolution was his favorite subject and he collected books, coins, stamps and hacienda tokens of that period. In large part he chose to live on Ventura's west side for its Latino influence. He felt close to Mexico there.

Len worked as a bank teller, postal worker, landscaper and picture framer. He was an artist and writer as well. Work continued on his Mexico journals until a few days before he died.

Len's sense of fairness and honesty was the basis for his political interest and community involvement. He was a founder of the Peace and Freedom Party in the late 1960s and moved on to local involvement in Ventura with the Westside Community Council. On that council's Soul Committee, he was instrumental in the creation of the Ventura Avenue Plaza Park, a grass-roots project that transformed a littered vacant lot into a tree- and flower-filled plaza using only recycled materials and local community support. Fortunately, the Avenue Plaza Park survives him.

He is also survived by his mother, Janette Evans of Oregon; sister, Linda Heckendorf, her husband, Phil, and his nieces, Jennifer and Emily Heckendorf, all of Thousand Oaks; his friends, Dr. Bruce McKay of Sacramento, Tom Hardison of Ventura, Jeff Morris of Thousand Oaks and many others, including those at Ventura County Public Health, the Ventura County Public Library, the Spanish Club and the Soul Committee. This winter his absence will be felt at the Hotel Lerma, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

A celebration of Len's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Ventura Avenue Plaza Park, adjacent to the Senior Center, 550 N. Ventura Ave.

Memorial contributions may be made in Len's memory to "Save the Ventura Avenue Plaza Park", c/o Mid State Bank, 304 E. Main St., Ventura, CA.
