He was a son of Elizabeth Anne (nee Penny), and Joseph Cole Ivens. Joseph (b 1845 in Warwickshire), died in 1900, was found in the Warwick and Birmingham Canal! The family were then living in Saltisford, Warwick. I am unable to find Ernest or Elizabeth (b 1843 in West Coker, Somerset) in the 1901 census-they are no longer in Saltisford as I have looked right through the census record there. It's possible they returned to West Coker, but no amount of searching has thus far revealed them. I have plenty of other records for them, but am curious as to where they went after Joseph died, and also am wondering if he (Joseph) died in suspicious circumstances-did he merely fall in the canal, was he pushed, or perhaps it was some kind of boating accident?
By 1911 Elizabeth is living in Powerstock, Dorset, as a companion.
Would be grateful for any help. Jan
