Hi Greg,

I was surprised to get e-mail about your post. I almost forgot I had left one here.

It is probably going to be difficult to find the truth about the part of your story that took place in Sicily, but you can certainly find out a lot about ancestors once they got here.

While working on my Capitano family I became frustrated because almost every Capitano family in Tampa, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania has the same given names. I started charting miscellaneous Capitano records on a separate chart – Miscellaneous Capitanos -- a lot of families are emerging from that.

I do have some information on the Ernest Ignacio and Bendetta Carlise Capitano family. I also have information on a LaRocca family that went from Louisiana to Tampa where LaRocca was stepfather to Capitanos. I haven’t really sorted all that out but they may be connected to your Ernest C.

Send e-mail and maybe we can sort some of this out and I can send you what I have.

Cynthia
CynthiaBis@yahoo.com

Hi Cynthia, Really new to this and trying to back track from a birth certificate my father 1930-2005 got for HIS father from a Santo Stefano, Sicily back in 1996. I seemed to recall he said it was near Taormina, although some in my family are posting SS in Messina. Our story is my great-grandmother was widowed (murder of Vincenzo Capitano)in 1899/1900 and put her three children Joe, Domenica, and Ernest I Capitano on a ship after threats to kill all the children as well. She would later come over and marry a LaRocca and resided in New Orleans and finally Tampa. I am trying learn the region better and track any history. It has been said that they were smuggled out, perhaps under assumed names, but in any case cant find any ship/entry records although fairly sure it was New York. Possibly New Orleans? Your family story may cross with my in some way. Would like to hear from you to see if this crosses your ancestry somehow. Thank you.

Greg Capitano

My second cousin, Alfonso Labruzzo was from St. Stefano, Agrigento, Sicily. He was alive in the 60's but our family lost track after that. If you have a record of his baptism or birth, as I need to know the last name of his mother.
(She was my great aunt...my grandfather's sister.) The reason why I need this is because when our family came to
America, our last name was changed all sorts of ways.
Alfonso's mother would be listed with the correct spelling.
Alfonso may have been born between 1916 and 1926.

I don't know if it's any relation, but my maternal grandmother was Maria Cristiano, born in 1857 (100 years before me!) and my father's given name was Vito. There may be some connection as some of the names are the same. (I'm sure you know that it is an Italian tradition for the first born male to be named after the paternal grandfather, second born male to be named after the maternal grandfather, first born female to be named after the paternal grandmother and the second born female to be named after the maternal grandmother.) For whatever it's worth, my paterna grandmother, Maria Cristiano's parents were Maria Antonia and Pietro Cristiano (born 1827. Pietro Cristiano's father was Francesco Cristiano. I have no other information besides that. However, my family and I are planning a trip to Europe this summer, including a trip to Castelgrande to do some family research. If you'd like, I could send you the information I find. Let me know.
--Theresa Nardo

We must be related. My grandfather was born late 1890s/1900 and his name is Vito Cristiano and he is from Castelgrande Italy. My grandfather was married to Laotilde Cerone and had three children, Domenico, Rosina and Guiseppe Cristiano. Vito also had a brother, Guiseppe Cristiano, who married Vito's wife's sister, Anna Rosa Cerone. Castelgrande is in the Potenza region near Basiclicata. Rosina still lives there and has two children, Ida Siaggese and Maria Pia. The Cristiano family is famous for having hosted St. Gerard at their home in Castelgrand during the 1700s when he was performing his miracles and charitable acts. Our family name is enscribed in a shrine of St. Gerard that stands about 20 miles outside of Castelgrande on a hill overlooking the ocean. You have to hike to get there and find someone to take you -- not easy to find.

My great grandfather's name was also Vito Cristiano. I don't know his year of birth but I would guess it to be around the 1880s. He was married young to Philomena Nardi and she died in an explosion at the family fireworks factory. I don't know the name of his second wife and am wondering if you are the family of the second wife. If you want to write me, please contact me at my e-mail at petedrummer@yahoo.com. My father, Domenico Cristiano, passed away a few days ago and I wish so much that I could speak to him about your question. I e-mail my cousin Ida in Italy so I can forward her questions to her if you like.

Hi Debbie!
My name is Naomi Chisley. I have been doing a little research on my family in hopes to construct a family tree. Looking up info on my distant cousin the former actress Ann Bancroft(Anna Maria Louise Italiano), I stumbled onto your message. We are apparently related. I am related to the Italiano family. My mother Julia Ann Simone (daughter of Olga Ann Simone)and her cousin Jean Simone (daughter of Mildred Simone)have told me that they had a cousin Vito Italiano who had a son Salvatore. Ann Bancroft had two sister's, Joanne and Phyllis. Her parents were Michael Italiano and mother Mildred DiNapoli. My mother's cousin Jean said that Vito would visit from New York every year or so. Somewhere along the line the Italiano family and either the Simone's, the Portanova's, the DeLuca's, the Sorreri's, or the Regillo's came together. Do any of these family names sound familiar to you? I have an address which I am not sure whom it belonged to: 169 Sickles Avenue, New Rochelle NY... I hope this message reaches you since I know that your message is from over 10 years ago. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Please email me if you do receive this at Naomi@Stoneblossomflorals.com.

Hello,
I am looking for records/information on ancestors from Santo Stefano. My grandfater was Salvatore Capitano b. 11 Nov 1884 in Santo Stefano. He had brothers, Antonio Capitano b. about 1881 and Guiseppe Capitano b. about 1895. Father was Nicola Capitano. Mother Teresa Traina.

Nicola probably immigrated to America in 1898. His sons, Antonio and Salvatore, joined him in New Orleans, Louisana approximately one year later.

If any one has information I will monitor this website or you can e-mail me at cynthiabis@yahoo.com.

Thanks for your help.
Cynthia
Dear Terry:

You may be more helpful to me than I would be to you.

Here what I know of my husband's side, "Italiano".

His grandfather came to the US through New Orleans. I understood that there were three brothers, one being my husband's grandfather, named Colgerio.Italiano. I was trying to find the ship that came in NO from Italy. Their family originates from Polermo, Italy.

According to the New York Census Bureau of 1930, Colgerio Italiano was married to Mararet, Their children were: Louise, Catherine, Jessie, Rosa, Matilda, Matthew and Agustus. They lived in City Island, New York City. I don't know how or when Colgerio moved into New York. He immigrated to the US in 1888

Margaret (Colgerio's wife) or Margretta's maiden name was Lagatutta.

If you have any information that maybe helpful, let me know. Particularly the ship that they may have sailed.

Best regards,

Donna

Hi!!!!!! Those are MY great grandparents. We are definately related. My mother, Mary Elaine Italiano, was born in New Orleans in 1927 to Mary Maria Dagro, who was married to Vincent Francis Italiano, son of Francesco and Elisabetta Macaluso. I heard that our family was from Palazzo Adriano, Sicily and I went there in the summer of 2007. It was high in the hills of central Sicily and mafia country. Although I don't know the language, I met a Macaluso in the bar!!!!! And from what I could figure out, there was one Italiano who lived there, Giusseppi (Joseph) but he had died. Have you found out anything else. I would like to know more about you. My personal email is terry.nelson@live.com

One reason that you're having problems is that the family has had a lot of anger, vendettas etc. Many of the people involved are still alive and unwilling to share information with other branches of the tree due to the hurts and angers of the past. I hope that one day we can all share more.

Hi. Regarding the Italiano's in New Orleans -
My great-great grandparents came to N.O. from Palazzo Adriano, Palermo, Sicily. They were Francesco (Frank) and Elisabetta (Elisabeth) Macaluso. (Italian women usually kept their surnames after marriage). He arrived here in 1890, she came later with two of their children in 1894 (on the Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm.) He was a shoemaker and they settled into New Orleans and we've apparently been here ever since.
I'm trying to research their roots in Sicily.
Maybe we're related??????

Hello David,

Thanks for the reply. My grandfather, Domenico Cardillo was married to Filomena Melillo. He came to America I believe in 1900. He came over on the ship, "Karamania". This you can see if you go to the Ellis Island website. Are you certain about the date of 1907 for your great grandfather? My family was friend's with the Masi family, actually related as I believe my great grandmother was a Masi. If you'd like to write directly, my email is kcardelle@hotmail.com.
I am in Connecticut, where are you located?

Thanks for writing.

Ken

Ken,

We may be related. From what I can tell, there are currently 4 Cardillo families listed in the phone directory in Castelgrande. My great grandfather Domenico Cardillo came to the U.S. in 1907, however, there were 2 other Domenico Cardelle's that came over within a few years of that same time period, so it is a little unclear. I believe he was married to Filomena and friends of the Masi family in Castelgrande.

I am working on the surname Yuro. It is a given that it was
changed to this spelling after arriving in USA. But what was it
originally? First inclination would be that it was something
like Iuro, Ioro [especially since it had been once entered by a
census taker as Yoro], Iorio, etc. However, recently it has
occurred to me that since the first ancester to enter country
could not only not speak English or neither read nor write, the
person recording it was entering what he thought he was
hearing ancester say. Perhaps, D'Uro, D'iuro or something
like that. How about Ciuro?
I'd love to hear some thoughts on this.
Please e-mail me directly at: bigred1442@yahoo.com
Thanks, Diane

Italiano/Cipriano/Russo in Italy or PA

I'm looking for any information on my Great Grandparents Pietro (Pete/Peter) Russo and Mary (Marianini) Cipriano. Pietro was born about 1892 in Italy, I think in Caserta, and immigrated to the USA about 1912. As far as I know he had brothers named Moses, Samuel, Michael, Louis and a sister named Mary. He lived with his wife,Mary/Marianini and children in Farrell, PA. He also had a hereditary disease called Polisystic kidneys. He died at the age of 36 from this disease. He had four children, two of which also died from the disease. Mary/Marianini was born in 1897 in Caserta, Italy. She was the daughter of Andrew Cipriano and Assunda (Susie) Italiano. She immigrated to the US with her mom and sisters in 1915. I believe that her father died in Italy before they came to the US. They were raised on a farm in Caserta, Italy. Mary had 3 sisters, Anastasia, Andriana, and Adaline and two brothers Dominic and Charles. They were all born in Italy and lived in PA. I would appreciate any information that anyone has on the Russo, Cipriano or Italiano side of the family. To write me back you can post a message or email me direct at BJean80@AOL.com Thanks! Brandee

I am curious to know more about your Italiano family. I am researching the Apisa/Cipriano/Italiano family for a friend.

Andrew Cipriano and his wife, Assunda Italiano had six children, including a daugher, Anastasia who was born 01 February 1903. Anastasia moved to the United States in 1915. She moved to Farrell, PA (a very small community just outside of the Sharon/Youngstown area). She married Domenico Apisa on 29 May 1921 (may have been 1920). Their children were first generation Americans. I'm researching the family for a second generation American.

Any help that you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated!!

He married may grandmother, Antoinette Chiaro. After they married, they moved to Waukesha, Wis. He had a brother Joseph, who also lived in Waukesha. He had two boys, Frank Jr. and Joseph, and three girls; Laura, Rose, and Louise. Any one with information can contact me at my Email address.
