I am working on the surname Yuro. It is a given that it was
changed to this spelling after arriving in USA. But what was it
originally? First inclination would be that it was something
like Iuro, Ioro [especially since it had been once entered by a
census taker as Yoro], Iorio, etc. However, recently it has
occurred to me that since the first ancester to enter country
could not only not speak English or neither read nor write, the
person recording it was entering what he thought he was
hearing ancester say. Perhaps, D'Uro, D'iuro or something
like that. How about Ciuro?
I'd love to hear some thoughts on this.
